The Joule thermal shock technique ensures the efficient construction of topological defects in the carbon matrix because the instantaneous cooling suppresses the graphitization rearrangement of the heteroatom removal sites. This topological defect carbon can activate carbon source molecules by electron transfer, and further grow into carbon nanotubes ...

A weakly solvating ether solvent, 1,2‐dimethoxypropane (DMP), is proposed for use in localized high‐concentration electrolytes (LHCEs) for lithium metal batteries (LMBs). These DMP‐based LHCEs simultaneously suppress lithium metal corrosion and cathode degradation—two interrelated processes that accelerate calendar aging of LMBs.

Cryogenic Carbon Monoxide Oxidation on Cuprous Oxide
A reconstructed Cu2O surface with pyramidal units (PY) contains both adsorption and reaction sites for CO oxidation. A suite of spectroscopy techniques and calculations were used to characterize the fundamental surface chemistry occurring below 100 K, where typically a metal/oxide interface is required.

Magnetic susceptibility, EPR, NEXAFS and XPS spectra of Fe-doped CaBi2Nb2O9
In order to study the electronic state of Fe atoms and interatomic exchange interactions in solid solutions of Bi2CaNb2−2xFe2xO9−δ with perovskite structure, methods of magnetic dilution, NEXAFS, XPS and EPR spectroscopy were used.

Internal molecular conformation of organic glasses: A NEXAFS study
The origin of the exceptional stability of molecular glasses grown by physical vapor deposition (PVD) is not well understood. Differences in glass density have been correlated with thermodynamic stability for thin films of N,N′-Bis(3-methylphenyl)-N,N′-diphenylbenzidine (TPD) grown by PVD at specific substrate temperatures below the glass transition ...

Combinatorial Nb‐doped TiO2 wafers with a lateral dopant gradient enable rapid mapping of how phase composition and defects influence photocatalytic activity. Optimized Nb content generates mixed anatase–rutile phases together with beneficial Ti3+ and oxygen vacancy defects, boosting dye‐degradation efficiency fivefold.

Adsorption of 5-Fluorouracil on Au(111) and Cu(111) surfaces
The adsorption of 5-Fluorouracil (5FU) on Au(111) and Cu(111) surfaces as a function of molecular coverage and temperature has been studied, using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy.

Evidence for short range orbital order in paramagnetic insulating (Al,V)_2O_3
The local structure of (Al_0.06V_0.94)_2O_3 in the paramagnetic insulating (PI) and antiferromagnetically ordered insulating (AFI) phase has been investigated using hard and soft x-ray absorption techniques.
