Optically pure (+)-nicotine from (.+-.)-nicotine and biological comparisons with (-)-nicotine

Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, 1979
Optically pure (+)-nicotine has been obtained from (+/-)-nicotine using a combination of d-tartaric acid and di-p-toluoyl-l-tartaric acid. As the di-d-tartrate salt, (+)-nicotine is less potent than (-)-nicotine di-l-tartrate in producing lethality in mice, on blood pressure in anesthetized rats, and in the isolated guinea-pig ileum, indicating ...

Tobacco Smoking, Nicotine, and Nicotine and Non-Nicotine Replacement Therapies

Heart Disease, 2001
Tobacco smoking is associated with an increased risk for the development of coronary and pulmonary vascular diseases and smoking cessation will greatly reduce this risk. Nicotine replacement and nonnicotine modalities have been used alone and in combination to help in smoking cessation.

The Form of Nicotine in Tobacco. Thermal Transfer of Nicotine and Nicotine Acid Salts to Nicotine in the Gas Phase

Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 1999
Thermal transfer to nicotine in the gas phase from neat nicotine, from various nicotine carboxylic acid salts, and from endogenous nicotine in Burley, Bright, and Oriental tobacco samples has been examined by thermogravimetric/differential thermal analysis/mass spectroscopy and evolved gas analysis.

Nicotine mydriasis

Drug and Alcohol Dependence, 1989
In mice, nicotine produces dose-dependent mydriasis following interperitoneal or intracerebroventicular administration but not after local application through the conjunctival sac. Since mydriasis is not prevented by cervical sympathectomy, it is likely to be due to central inhibition of the parasympathetic tone.

Nicotine Vaccines

CNS & Neurological Disorders - Drug Targets, 2011
Smoking is a global healthcare problem. Current smoking cessation rates using behavioral counseling and pharmacotherapeutic interventions have had modest success, with ∼1:5 smokers remaining abstinent long-term. Nicotine vaccines are a new class of immunotherapeutics under development.

Nicotine metabolism variability and nicotine addiction

Nicotine & Tobacco Research, 1999
Individual variation in nicotine metabolism may play a role in a person's level of smoking, as well as in the transition from initiation to maintenance of a smoking behavior pattern. Since there is a paucity of research on nicotine metabolism in youth that smoke, a brief review of salient aspects of nicotine metabolism in adults provides a basis from ...

NICOTINE POISONING WITH A SALT OF NICOTINE

Journal of the American Medical Association, 1939
The reported instances of fatal nicotine poisoning according to Webster 1 and to Beeman and Hunter 2 are relatively infrequent. The nicotine insecticides are the usual preparations of nicotine used for suicidal purposes. To our knowledge there have been no reports of poisoning with a dry salt of nicotine.

Nicotine for schizophrenia

Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, 2004
The proportion of people with schizophrenia who smoke is very high, and as a rule, they tend to be heavier smokers when compared to the general population and those with other psychiatric disorders. Nicotine, the psychoactive component in tobacco, is thought to produce psychological effects that help to alleviate psychotic symptoms. To examine the ...
