Nicotine Vaccines

CNS & Neurological Disorders - Drug Targets, 2011
Smoking is a global healthcare problem. Current smoking cessation rates using behavioral counseling and pharmacotherapeutic interventions have had modest success, with ∼1:5 smokers remaining abstinent long-term. Nicotine vaccines are a new class of immunotherapeutics under development.

Nicotine mydriasis

Drug and Alcohol Dependence, 1989
In mice, nicotine produces dose-dependent mydriasis following interperitoneal or intracerebroventicular administration but not after local application through the conjunctival sac. Since mydriasis is not prevented by cervical sympathectomy, it is likely to be due to central inhibition of the parasympathetic tone.

Tobacco Smoking, Nicotine, and Nicotine and Non-Nicotine Replacement Therapies

Heart Disease, 2001
Tobacco smoking is associated with an increased risk for the development of coronary and pulmonary vascular diseases and smoking cessation will greatly reduce this risk. Nicotine replacement and nonnicotine modalities have been used alone and in combination to help in smoking cessation.

Optically pure (+)-nicotine from (.+-.)-nicotine and biological comparisons with (-)-nicotine

Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, 1979
Optically pure (+)-nicotine has been obtained from (+/-)-nicotine using a combination of d-tartaric acid and di-p-toluoyl-l-tartaric acid. As the di-d-tartrate salt, (+)-nicotine is less potent than (-)-nicotine di-l-tartrate in producing lethality in mice, on blood pressure in anesthetized rats, and in the isolated guinea-pig ileum, indicating ...

Nicotine-mecamylamine interactions

Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics, 1999
Mecamylamine blocks nicotinic cholinergic receptors and has been proposed, in combination with nicotine, as a novel therapy to aid smoking cessation. The objective of this study was to characterize the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic interactions between transdermal mecamylamine and intravenous nicotine.Twelve cigarette smokers were studied while ...

Nicotine issues

Psychopharmacology, 1992
This issue has covered most of the important concerns of nicotine researchers. Inevitably, there are gaps, because the selection of papers could only cover those which had been submitted or were known to be in preparation and about to be submitted. Nevertheless, these articles should serve to stimulate further discussion of and investigation into all ...

Passive immunization against nicotine prevents nicotine alleviation of nicotine abstinence syndrome

Pharmacology Biochemistry and Behavior, 2001
Passive immunization against nicotine interferes with its locomotor and pressor effects. The current study determined whether immunization could prevent another nicotine action: the reversal of nicotine abstinence syndrome. IgG containing 4.4-5.6% nicotine-specific antibody was isolated from rabbits immunized with 3'-amino-methyl-nicotine conjugated to
