We previously demonstrated that curcumin reduces cholesterol absorption in Caco-2 cells through down-regulating Niemann-Pick C1-like 1 (NPC1L1) expression, but the in vivo effect of curcumin on intestinal cholesterol absorption remains unknown. The present study aimed to investigate the effects and mechanisms of curcumin consumption on cholesterol ...

The 5′‐UTR of Niemann‐Pick C1‐Like 1 Enhances Translation Efficiency
The FASEB Journal, 2017Intestinal Neimann‐Pick C1 Like‐1 (NPC1L1) is essential for cholesterol absorption. Reduction in NPC1L1 expression reduces plasma cholesterol and lowers the risk of atherosclerosis. Gene expression may be modulated by transcriptional and/or post‐transcriptional mechanisms.

Dual Action Of The Ezetimibe Target Niemann-Pick C1-Like 1
Future Lipidology, 2007Low-density lipoprotein (LDL), the major cholesterol carrier in human blood, is the offending agent of coronary heart disease (CHD), which remains the leading cause of death in developed countries. Levels of blood cholesterol are mainly controlled by de novo biosynthesis, intestinal absorption and biliary/intestinal excretion.

Niemann–Pick C1 like 1 gene expression is down-regulated by LXR activators in the intestine
Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 2006Niemann-Pick C1 like 1 (NPC1L1) is a protein critical for intestinal cholesterol absorption. The nuclear receptors peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARalpha) and liver X receptors (LXRalpha and LXRbeta) are major regulators of cholesterol homeostasis and their activation results in a reduced absorption of intestinal cholesterol.

Orlistat limits cholesterol intestinal absorption by Niemann-pick C1-like 1 (NPC1L1) inhibition
European Journal of Pharmacology, 2015The known mechanism by which orlistat decreases the absorption of dietary cholesterol is by inhibition of intestinal lipases. The aim of this study was to investigate the ability of orlistat to limit cholesterol absorption by inhibition of the cholesterol transport protein Niemann-Pick C1-like 1 (NPC1L1) as another mechanism of action.

In the past 2 years the Niemann-Pick C1-like 1 protein has rapidly emerged as a key regulator of intestinal cholesterol absorption. This review covers the limited number of published reports to develop a hypothesis of the potential function of Niemann-Pick C1-like 1 protein and outlines questions that should be addressed in future studies.Considerable ...

Niemann-Pick C1-like 1 (NPC1L1) protein is the key transporter responsible for dietary cholesterol absorption. Recent studies indicated that several functional polymorphisms of NPC1L1 were associated with coronary heart disease (CHD) and response to ezetimibe therapy.

[Progress of Niemann-Pick type C1 Like 1 on cholesterol metabolism].
Sheng li xue bao : [Acta physiologica Sinica], 2015The polytopic transmembrane protein, Niemann-Pick type C1 Like 1 (NPC1L1), is the key point of exogenous cholesterol absorption and plays an important role in cholesterol metabolism. However, the molecular mechanism of NPC1L1's role in cholesterol uptake remains unclear. NPC1L1 expression is highly regulated by a variety of molecular actors.
