Genetics in methanogens: transposon insertion mutagenesis of a Methanococcus maripaludis nifH gene [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Bacteriology, 1995
We designed a transposon insertion mutagenesis system for Methanococcus species and used it to make mutations in and around a nifH gene in Methanococcus maripaludis. The transposon Mudpur was constructed with a gene for puromycin resistance that is expressed and selectable in Methanococcus species. A 15.6-kb nifH region from M.

Relationships between soil physicochemical properties and nitrogen fixing, nitrifying and denitrifying under varying land-use practices in the northwest region of Argentina [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The aim of this study was to evaluate the response pattern of diazotrophic microbes, denitrifiers and nitrifiers to different types of land use management, such as soybean monoculture (M) during 5 and 24 years (M5 and M24) and soybean-maize rotation (R ...

Azonexus hydrophilus sp. nov., a nifH gene-harbouring bacterium isolated from freshwater [PDF]

open access: yesINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF SYSTEMATIC AND EVOLUTIONARY MICROBIOLOGY, 2008
Three Gram-negative, non-pigmented, rod-shaped, facultatively aerobic bacterial strains, designated d8-1T, d8-2 and IMCC1716, were isolated from a freshwater spring sample and a eutrophic freshwater pond. Based on characterization using a polyphasic approach, the three strains showed highly similar phenotypic, physiological and genetic characteristics.

Microbiome of Trichodesmium Colonies from the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2017
Filamentous diazotrophic Cyanobacteria of the genus Trichodesmium, often found in colonial form, provide an important source of new nitrogen to tropical and subtropical marine ecosystems.

Novel Methanotrophs of the Family Methylococcaceae from Different Geographical Regions and Habitats [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Terrestrial methane seeps and rice paddy fields are important ecosystems in the methane cycle. Methanotrophic bacteria in these ecosystems play a key role in reducing methane emission into the atmosphere.

Response of biological soil crust diazotrophs to season, altered summer precipitation and year-round increased temperature in an arid grassland of the Colorado Plateau, USA

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2012
Biological soil crusts (biocrusts), which supply significant amounts of fixed nitrogen into terrestrial ecosystems worldwide (~33 Tg y-1), are likely to respond to changes in temperature and precipitation associated with climate change.

GuaB Activity Is Required in Rhizobium tropici During the Early Stages of Nodulation of Determinate Nodules but Is Dispensable for the Sinorhizobium meliloti–Alfalfa Symbiotic Interaction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
The guaB mutant strain Rhizobium tropici CIAT8999-10T is defective in symbiosis with common bean, forming nodules that lack rhizobial content. In order to investigate the timing of the guaB requirement during the nodule formation on the host common ...

Nucleotide sequence of a cyanobacterial nifH gene coding for nitrogenase reductase [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 1980
The nucleotide sequence of nifH , the structural gene for nitrogenase reductase (component II or Fe protein of nitrogenase) from the cyanobacterium Anabaena 7120 has been determined. Also reported are 194 bases of the 5′-flanking sequence and 170 bases of the 3′-flanking sequence.

Possible association of diazotrophs with marine zooplankton in the Pacific Ocean

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, 2016
Dinitrogen fixation, the biological reduction in N2 gas to ammonia contributes to the supply of new nitrogen in the surface ocean. To understand the diversity and abundance of potentially diazotrophic (N2 fixing) microorganisms associated with marine ...

Model for eukaryotic tail-anchored protein binding based on the structure of Get3 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The Get3 ATPase directs the delivery of tail-anchored (TA) proteins to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). TA-proteins are characterized by having a single transmembrane helix (TM) at their extreme C terminus and include many essential proteins, such as ...
