Liver organoids: modelling complexity in homeostasis and disease

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Studying liver in vitro has been challenging because simple 2D cell cultures fail to capture liver's cellular and architectural complexity. To bridge this gap, scientists increasingly use organoids, 3D liver models which better mimic liver composition and function. This review examines recent advances in liver organoid complexity and realism, discusses

Arbuscular Mycorrhiza and Nitrification: Disentangling Processes and Players by Using Synthetic Nitrification Inhibitors

open access: yesApplied and Environmental Microbiology, 2022
Nitrogen is one of the most important elements for all life on Earth. In soil, N is present in various chemical forms and is fiercely competed for by various microorganisms as well as plants.

Partial depletion of plasminogen activator inhibitor‐1 decreases subcutaneous fat cell hypertrophy and liver cholesterol in high‐fat‐fed female mice

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Obesity raises blood levels of PAI‐1, a protein linked to metabolic dysfunction‐associated steatotic liver disease in people with obesity. In female mice fed a high‐fat diet, partially lowering PAI‐1 led to smaller subcutaneous fat cells and lower liver cholesterol, without changing body weight or insulin sensitivity.

Urease and nitrification inhibitors with drip fertigation strategies to mitigate global warming potential and improve water-nitrogen efficiency of maize under semi-arid regions

open access: yesAgricultural Water Management
The limited availability of water resources and the significant loss of nitrogen oxides are severe constraints on agricultural development in dry-land agricultural systems of China.

Effect of straw and inhibitors on the fate of nitrogen applied to paddy soil

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2020
A pot experiment was used to explore the distribution of fertilizer N and agronomic effects in a paddy soil-rice (Oryza sativa L.) system. Five treatments were set: without nitrogen, straw and inhibitor (C), urea (U), urea + straw (US), urea + urease ...

Fate of 15N-labelled ammonium nitrate with or without the new nitrification inhibitor DMPSA in an irrigated maize crop

open access: yes, 2017
Nitrification inhibitors, originally proposed for nitrate leaching mitigation, are recommended as effective nitrous oxide (N2O) mitigation strategies.

Structures of mycobacterial 3‐methylcrotonyl‐CoA carboxylase reveal carrier‐domain translocation between catalytic sites

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mycobacterial 3‐methylcrotonyl‐CoA carboxylase uses a mobile biotin‐carrying domain to shuttle a carboxyl group between two catalytic sites, enabling carboxylation of 3‐methylcrotonyl‐CoA during leucine breakdown. Cryo‐electron microscopy captures the carrier at both sites and reveals an inward loop movement that may prevent futile rebinding to the ...

Bacteriostatic action of nitrification inhibitors

open access: yesCanadian Journal of Microbiology, 1982
Nitrification inhibitors were investigated in an attempt to establish whether such chemicals actually kill ammonium-oxidizing bacteria (bactericidal action) or whether bacteria remain viable but temporarily incapable of nitrification (bacteriostatic action).

Corn Yield Response to the Use of a Nitrification Inhibitor with Anhydrous Ammonia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Nitrification inhibitors are used to delay the nitrification process, reducing nitrogen (N) loss. The increase of nitrogen fertilization efficiency could promote greater corn grain yields and reduce environmental losses.

The Shewanella oneidensis Fic enzyme SoFic targets the switch‐I region of EF‐Tu for AMPylation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fic enzymes mediate diverse post‐translational modifications across all domains of life, including AMPylation. Prokaryotic EF‐Tu can be AMPylated and deAMPylated by the conserved Fic enzyme SoFic. Structural and biochemical approaches were used to characterize the effect of AMPylation on EF‐Tu, SoFic's enzymatic activities, and the enzyme‐target ...
