High-Rate Nitrification Using Aerobic Granular Sludge

open access: yesWater Science and Technology, 2006
The performance of nitrifying granules, which had been produced in an aerobic upflow fluidised bed (AUFB) reactor, was investigated in various types of ammonia-containing wastewaters. When pure oxygen was supplied to the AUFB reactor with a synthetic wastewater containing a high concentration of ammonia (500 g-N/m3), the ammonia removal rate reached 16.

Importance and measurement of decay rate when assessing nitrification kinetics

open access: yes, 2005
Nitrification kinetics are important for process design, optimization and capacity rating of activated sludge wastewater treatment plants. Assessment of nitrification behaviour historically has focused on measuring the nitrifier maximum specific growth ...

Characteristics and influencing mechanisms of soil nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from forestlands at different slope positions in karst regions

open access: yesCarsologica Sinica
Greenhouse gases reflect long-wave infrared radiation from the Earth’s surface, causing the rise in global temperatures. Nitrous oxide (N2O) is one of the three major greenhouse gases, with a century-long warming potential 296 times greater than that of ...

pH rather than nitrification and urease inhibitors determines the community of ammonia oxidizers in a vegetable soil

open access: yesAMB Express, 2017
Nitrification inhibitors and urease inhibitors, such as nitrapyrin and N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide (NBPT), can improve the efficiencies of nitrogen fertilizers in cropland.

A study of nitrification in lakes of the English Lake District

open access: yes, 1981
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel University.Nitrification became the dominant nitrogen transformation in a number of lakes which accumulated ammonium, in hypolimnetic water, under aerobic ...

Nitrificación del amonio a partir de un fertilizante de liberación controlada y úrea convencional en dos suelos de iowa, EEUU Nitrification of ammonium nitrogen from a controlled release fertilizer and conventional urea in two soils of Iowa, USA

open access: yesBioagro, 2010
El retardo en la tasa de nitrificación del amonio es un factor importante a considerar para disminuir las pérdidas de fertilizantes aplicados al suelo.

Contingent Effects of Liming on N2O-Emissions Driven by Autotrophic Nitrification

open access: yesFrontiers in Environmental Science, 2020
Liming acidic soils is often found to reduce their N2O emission due to lowered N2O/(N2O + N2) product ratio of denitrification. Some field experiments have shown the opposite effect, however, and the reason for this could be that liming stimulates ...

Nitrous oxide emissions from ephemeral wetland soils are correlated with microbial community composition

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2011
Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a greenhouse gas with a global warming potential far exceeding that of CO2. Soil N2O emissions are a product of two microbially mediated processes: nitrification and denitrification.

The effect of urinary nitrogen loading rate and a nitrification inhibitor on nitrous oxide emissions from a temperate grassland soil

open access: yes, 2014
Nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions associated with urine nitrogen (N) deposition during grazing are a major component of greenhouse gas emissions from domestic livestock.
