Apparent and Measured Rates of Nitrification in the Hypolimnion of a Mesotrophic Lake [PDF]

open access: yesApplied and Environmental Microbiology, 1982
Three distinct phases were observed in the change of dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentrations in the hypolimnion of Grasmere. The second phase of decreasing ammonia and increasing nitrate concentrations was typical of the nitrification process.

Single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assays for high‐throughput DNA–protein interaction studies

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We describe an optimised single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assay that visualises DNA–protein interactions in real time. Linear DNA fragments are tethered to a surface and stretched by buffer flow for fluorescence imaging. Using λ and φX174 DNA, this protocol enhances reproducibility and accessibility, providing a versatile approach for studying diverse ...

Performance of three kinds of nitrification sludge

open access: yes工程科学与技术, 2009
:Batch experiments were carried out to study the performances of three kinds of nitrification sludge of seeding sludge (S1) and nitrification sludge (S2 and S3) taken from a bioreactor run with inorganic or organic ammonia containing wastewater for a ...

Assesment of nitrification and denitrification rate in biological nitrogen removal from wastewater

open access: yesJournal of Environmental Engineering and Landscape Management, 2007
Biological nitrogen removal from wastewater is based on nitrification and denitrification processes in biological treatment plants with activated sludge. Slowed growth of nitrification bacteria is one of basic problems in biological nitrogen removal from

YIPFα1A expression is regulated by multilayered molecular mechanisms

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
YIPFα1A, a five‐pass Golgi protein, is regulated at multiple layers. (1) Rare‐codon enrichment drives translation‐coupled mRNA decay. (2) A proximal 3′‐UTR element stabilizes mRNA. (3) A distal 3′‐UTR element included by alternate poly(A) site usage represses translation, which can be overridden by the proximal 3′‐UTR element.

Dicyandiamide as nitrification inhibitor of pig slurry ammonium nitrogen in soil

open access: yesCiência Rural, 2016
: Inhibition of nitrification of ammoniacal nitrogen pig slurry after its application to the soil can mitigate nitrogen (N) losses by nitrate (NO3 -) denitrification and leaching, with economical and environmental benefits.

Temporal variation in maximum cell-specific nitrification rate

open access: yesWater Science and Technology, 2010
The cell numbers of ammonia-oxidising bacteria (AOBs), Nitrospira and Nitrobacter in activated sludge used to treat wastewater from a thermal power plant in Japan were examined for nine months using a real-time PCR quantification technique. AOB cell numbers ranged 2.8 × 1010–2.3 × 1011 cell/L.

Molecular dynamics simulations of positively selected codons in FcγRI reveal novel biochemical binding properties

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Evolutionary analysis across 32 placental mammals identified positive selection at residues H148 and W149 in the immune receptor FcγR1. Ancestral reconstruction combined with molecular dynamics simulations reveals how these mutations may influence receptor structure and dynamics, providing insight into the evolution of antibody recognition and immune ...

The effect of high solute concentrations on nitrification rates in soil

open access: yesPlant and Soil, 1987
A short term nitrification assay ( ammonium sulphate>sorbitol up to the maximum osmotic pressure studied (25 atm). With ammonium chloride, a pressure of 3.5 atm. was sufficient to cause a 90% inhibition of nitrification rate. The inhibition produced by mixtures of ammonium chloride and sorbitol, each mixture generating an osmotic pressure of 5 atm.

Rates and controls of nitrification in a large oligotrophic lake [PDF]

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, 2012
Recent discoveries have altered prevailing paradigms concerning the conditions under which nitrification takes place and the organisms responsible for nitrification in aquatic ecosystems. In Lake Superior, nitrate () concentrations have increased fivefold in the past century. Although previous evidence indicated that most is generated by nitrification
