Clinical pharmacology and prescribing education: An updated medical school curriculum from the British Pharmacological Society

open access: yesBritish Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Aims Prescribing is a complex, essential skill that doctors must acquire to practice medicine safely and effectively. The British Pharmacological Society has historically provided a core curriculum to guide clinical pharmacology and prescribing education in UK medical schools.

Community-acquired lower urinary tract infections: Etiology, antimicrobial resistance, and treatment results in female patients

open access: yesJournal of Global Infectious Diseases, 2018
Background/Purpose: Most community-acquired urinary tract infections (UTIs) are usually treated empirically. The knowledge of antibiotic resistance patterns of the microorganisms causing UTI is essential for defining the empirical treatment.

Nitrofurantoin Combined With Amikacin: A Promising Alternative Strategy for Combating MDR Uropathogenic Escherichia coli

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology, 2020
Urinary tract infections (UTI) are common infections that can be mild to life threatening. However, increased bacterial resistance and poor patient compliance rates have limited the effectiveness of conventional antibiotic therapies.

Development of Inhalable Spray Dried Nitrofurantoin Formulations for the Treatment of Emphysema

open access: yesPharmaceutics, 2022
A central characteristic of emphysematous progression is the continuous destruction of the lung extracellular matrix (ECM). Current treatments for emphysema have only addressed symptoms rather than preventing or reversing the loss of lung ECM ...

Antibiotic sensitivities of urinary tract pathogenes in Maltese patients [PDF]

open access: yes, 1993
A survey of over 1000 bacterial isolates from Maltese patients with urinary tract infection was performed in order to investigate resistance patterns to commonly used oral antibiotics.

Consistency and clarity of pharmacogenomic guidance in UK medicine patient information leaflets: A cross‐sectional analysis

open access: yesBritish Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Pharmacogenomic (PGx) information has the potential to support the safe and effective use of medicines, yet there is uncertainty about how this information can be best communicated to patients. Summaries of product characteristics (SmPCs) and patient information leaflets (PILs) for all UK‐approved medicines with strong evidence supporting a PGx ...

New Solid Forms of Nitrofurantoin and 4-Aminopyridine Salt: Influence of Salt Hydration Level on Crystal Packing and Physicochemical Properties

open access: yesMolecules, 2022
The crystallization of the poorly soluble drug nitrofurantoin (NFT) with 4-aminopyridine (4AmPy) resulted in three multicomponent solid forms with different hydration levels: anhydrous salt [NFT+4AmPy] (1:1), salt monohydrate [NFT+4AmPy+H2O] (1:1:1), and

Detecting Antibiotic Resistance in Strains of Selected Gram‐Negative Bacterial Species Using Raman Spectroscopy

open access: yesJournal of Raman Spectroscopy, EarlyView.
Raman spectroscopy successfully identified antibiotic‐resistant Gram‐negative strains. Resistant strains of four bacterial species were discriminated from sensitive ones with 99.1% accuracy using PLS regression. The method allows for rapid, label‐free detection of antibiotic resistance.
