B Vitamin Nitrogen Heterocycles

This second chapter on how the chemistry of nitrogen heterocycles enables biology deals with seven of the eight members of the B vitamins, all coenzymes that enable much of primary metabolism. Each of the seven B vitamins presents a distinct type of nitrogen heterocycle with unique underlying chemistry to mediate substrate to product conversions.

On treating 1,2,4,5-tetrakis(trifluoromethyl)-6-aza-3-thiatricyclo[3.1.0.02,4]hexane, obtained by photolysis of 1,2,4,5-tetrakis(trifluoromethyl)-3-thia-6,7,8-triaza-tricyclo[3.3.0.02.4]oct-6-ene in ether (low-pressure Hg lamp, 20 h), with (C6H5)3P in n-pentane, the 5-azabicyclo[2.1.0]pent2-ene was formed as a light yellow oil (40.9% yield) [1, 2].
