Tinidazole: A nitroimidazole antiprotozoal agent

Clinical Therapeutics, 2005
Tinidazole, a structural analogue of metrondazole, is an antiprotozoal agent that has been widely used in Europe and developing countries for >2 decades with established efficacy and acceptable tolerability. It was recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of trichomoniasis, giardiasis, amebiasis, and amebic liver ...

Metabolism of Nitroimidazoles

1982
The development in recent years of nitroimidazoles as chemotherapeutic agents has been extensive. The interest in this class of compounds apparently was raised in 1955 by the elucidation of the structure of the antibiotic Azomycin by Nakamura(l) and the discovery of the in vivo activity of 5-nitro-imidazoles against Trichomonas vaginalis(2). Since then

Alkylated/aminated nitroimidazoles and nitroimidazole-7-chloroquinoline conjugates: Synthesis and anti-mycobacterial evaluation

Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry Letters, 2018
The success in exploring anti-tubercular potency of nitroimidazole and quinoline, the core moieties of recently approved anti-tubercular drugs instigated us to synthesize a series of alkylated/aminated 2-methyl-5-nitroimidazoles and nitroimidazole-7-chloroquinoline conjugates and to evaluate them for their activities against Mycobacterium tuberculosis ...

Permeability of Nitroimidazoles in Rat Cortex

Chemotherapy, 1986
The right cerebral hemisphere of the rat was perfused in situ by retrograde bolus infusion of some nitroimidazole drugs into the external carotid artery. The right jugular vein served to collect blood samples. Drugs were continuously measured in the right cortex by microvoltametric electrodes and in blood samples by high-performance liquid ...

Antiparasitic Nitroimidazoles: 6. The Metabolism and Excretion of Some 2-Styryl-5-nitroimidazoles

Xenobiotica, 1973
Abstract1. The metabolism and excretion of several 2-styryl-5-nitroimidazoles, which have shown interesting antiparasitic activity in laboratory animals, is described.2. Species differences have been observed in the formation of metabolites by oxidation of the alkyl group of the styryl nucleus.3.

Pharmacokinetics of Nitroimidazoles

1982
In this paper I want to try and show how a knowledge of the metabolism and pharmacokinetics of a compound helps us to understand the reasons why it may or may not satisfy the criteria desired of a particular drug. How we want a drug to behave depends on the use we have in mind for it. For example, in Fig.

On the mutagenicity of nitroimidazoles

Mutation Research/Reviews in Genetic Toxicology, 1981
Regarding mutagenicity, metronidazole is one of the best-investigated compounds of the nitroimidazoles. This drug is mutagenic on bacteria, especially if base-pair tester strains are used and bacterial nitroreductases are present. The serum levels attained in man after intake of this drug are sufficient to cause mutations in bacteria.

Modification of chemotherapy by nitroimidazoles

International Journal of Radiation Oncology*Biology*Physics, 1984
The potentiation of chemotherapeutic agents by radiation sensitizers has been extensively studied for several years. There is little doubt that the effectiveness of certain anti-cancer drugs, primarily alkylating agents, can readily be enhanced both in vitro and in vivo through the addition of a sensitizer.
