Natural combinatorics: Evolutionary mixing and matching of three cyanobacterial biosynthetic gene clusters resulted in the emergence of minutumamides, a novel family of peptide‐polyketide hybrids. Retro‐evolutionary analysis led to the discovery of nostopeptolide KVJ3, an evolutionary ancestor that links nostopeptolide and minutumamide biosynthesis and

First Report of the Co-occurrence of Cylindrospermopsin, Nodularin and Microcystins in the Freshwaters of Lake Victoria, Tanzania [PDF]
There is a global concern regarding the increase of cyanotoxins in freshwater and their potential effects on human health. The existence of multiple toxins in freshwater can result in an increased risk of their bioaccumulation in humans from their ...

Pathway for Biodegrading Nodularin (NOD) by Sphingopyxis sp. USTB-05
Nodularin (NOD) is greatly produced by Nodularia spumigena and released into the environment when toxic cyanobacterial blooms happened in natural water body, which is seriously harmful to human and animals.

Abstract Interest in winter limnology is growing rapidly, but progress is hindered by a shortage of standardized multivariate datasets on winter conditions. Addressing the winter data gap will enhance our understanding of winter ecosystem function and of lake response to environmental change.

Synthesis of cyclic peptides modelled on the microcystin and nodularin rings [PDF]
Several precursor cyclic peptides modelled on the ring systems of microcystin-LR and nodularin were synthesized. Synthesis was best achieved using solid-phase cyclization with solution-phase methods being successful in only one instance.

Pesticide contamination in aquatic environments poses severe risks to fish health, causing oxidative stress, immunosuppression, endocrine disruption, and neurotoxicity. These effects result from the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROSs), enzyme inhibition, and damage to physiological systems. Plant‐derived compounds and phytochemicals, such as

Comparative effects of nodularin and microcystin-LR in zebrafish: 2. Uptake and molecular effects in eleuthero-embryos and adult liver with focus on endoplasmic reticulum stress [PDF]
Microcystin (MC) and nodularin are structurally similar cyanobacterial toxins that inhibit protein phosphatases. Additional modes of action are poorly known, in particular for nodularin.

Effects of Seasonal Dynamics on Cyanobacteria Proliferation in Aquaculture Fish Ponds
Aquaculture production supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), by enhancing food security and sustainable practices. This study investigated the seasonal dynamics of cyanobacterial (CB) blooms in aquaculture fishponds in South Africa (SA) and Nigeria (NGA). Water samples were collected twice per
