'Metal elements and pesticides as risk factors for Parkinson's disease - A review'

open access: yesToxicology Reports, 2021
Essential metals including iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) with known physiological functions in human body play an important role in cell homeostasis. Excessive exposure to these essential as well as non-essential metals including mercury (Hg) and Aluminum

Cloning and Characterization of TpNRAMP3, a Metal Transporter From Polish Wheat (Triticum polonicum L.)

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2018
Essential transition metals and non-essential metals often co-exist in arable soils. In plants, some transition metal transporters, such as the natural resistance-associated macrophage proteins (NRAMPs), poorly selectively transport metals with similar ...

Levels of essential and non-essential metals in the raw seeds and processed food (roasted seeds and bread) of maize/corn (Zea mays L.) cultivated in selected areas of Ethiopia

open access: yes, 2017
The levels of metals in raw maize seeds and its processed foods (roasted seed and bread) collected from Shendi, Finote Selam and Debre Tabor (Ethiopia) were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (major metals) and graphite furnace atomic ...

Application of metallomics and metalloproteomics for understanding the molecular mechanism of action of metal-based drugs

open access: yes, 2017
Metals play a significant role in biological processes, and metal-based drugs nowadays have been commonly used for therapeutic and diagnostic purposes. However, due to severe side effects with metallodrugs and acquired drug resistance, more metallodrugs ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Bioaccumulation of Metals in Some Fish Species from the Romanian Danube River: A Review

open access: yesFishes, 2023
The Danube is the second-largest river in Europe and has been subject to pollution in the past. Additionally, in the last few years, the rapid pace of industrialization and urbanization has led to the inevitable pollution of this aquatic ecosystem by ...
