Smart, Bio‐Inspired Polymers and Bio‐Based Molecules Modified by Zwitterionic Motifs to Design Next‐Generation Materials for Medical Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bio‐based and (semi‐)synthetic zwitterion‐modified novel materials and fully synthetic next‐generation alternatives show the importance of material design for different biomedical applications. The zwitterionic character affects the physiochemical behavior of the material and deepens the understanding of chemical interaction mechanisms within the ...

Glucagon receptor antagonism impairs and glucagon receptor agonism enhances triglycerides metabolism in mice

open access: yesMolecular Metabolism, 2022
Objective: Treatment with glucagon receptor antagonists (GRAs) reduces blood glucose but causes dyslipidemia and accumulation of fat in the liver. We investigated the acute and chronic effects of glucagon on lipid metabolism in mice.

In preeclampsia, maternal third trimester subcutaneous adipocyte lipolysis is more resistant to suppression by insulin than in healthy pregnancy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Obesity increases preeclampsia risk, and maternal dyslipidemia may result from exaggerated adipocyte lipolysis. We compared adipocyte function in preeclampsia with healthy pregnancy to establish whether there is increased lipolysis.

Microenvironmental Reprogramming by 3D Anisotropic Cardiac Extracellular Matrix Induces Nuclear Remodeling and Epigenetic Maturation of Chemically Induced Cardiomyocytes

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A 3D anisotropic hydrogel derived from heart extracellular matrix guides cytoskeletal alignment and nuclear remodeling in reprogrammed cardiomyocyte‐like cells. This study reveals how matrix alignment modulates nuclear envelope dynamics and chromatin state, triggering transcriptional and functional maturation.

Lipid metabolism analysis in liver of different chicken genotypes and impact on nutritionally relevant polyunsaturated fatty acids of meat

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2022
Humans and mammalian species are unable to synthesize significant amounts of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), which therefore must be introduced with the diet.

Effect of Intravenous Amino Acids on Plasma Non-Esterified Fatty Acids.

open access: yesExperimental Biology and Medicine, 1959
Summary(1) The effect of infusing an amino acid mixture (protein hydrolysate) on plasma NEFA, venous glucose level, and capillary-venous glucose difference, was studied in 6 healthy volunteer subjects. In every instance, plasma NEFA levels fell precipitously during amino acid infusion, and capillary-venous glucose differences increased concurrently ...

Insulin response and changes in composition of non-esterified fatty acids in blood plasma of middle-aged men following isoenergetic fatty and carbohydrate breakfasts [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
It was previously shown that a high plasma concentration of non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) persisted after a fatty breakfast, but not after an isoenergetic carbohydrate breakfast, adversely affecting glucose tolerance.

Strategies for Loading and Releasing Peptide Therapeutics in Biodegradable Carriers

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A biodegradable carrier‐based peptide delivery system is a powerful treatment platform for diverse diseases, owing to its superior therapeutic efficacy and low toxicity. This review examines the conventional peptide‐loaded carrier fabrication process and its current limitations.

Lack of relationship between cord serum angiopoietin-like protein 4 (ANGPTL4) and lipolytic activity in human neonates born by spontaneous delivery.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
BackgroundLigands of peroxisome-proliferator activated receptors (PPARs), such as non-esterified fatty acids (NEFAs), induce expression of angiopoietin-like protein 4 (ANGPTL4). Recently ANGPTL4 has been reported to be a mediator of intracellular adipose

Effect of high and low glycaemic index recovery diets on intramuscular lipid oxidation during aerobic exercise [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Intramyocellular lipid (IMCL) and plasma NEFA are important skeletal muscle fuel sources. By raising blood insulin concentrations, carbohydrate ingestion inhibits lypolysis and reduces circulating NEFA.
