Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Two-photon all-optical neurophysiology for the dissection of larval zebrafish brain functional and effective connectivity

open access: yesCommunications Biology
One of the most audacious goals of modern neuroscience is unraveling the complex web of causal relations underlying the activity of neuronal populations on a whole-brain scale.

Overcoming the thermal regime for the electric-field driven Mott transition in vanadium sesquioxide

open access: yesNature Communications, 2019
Thermal effects limit the speed of the electrically driven insulator-metal transition in V2O3 to tens of picoseconds. Here the authors show that under an intense THz-electric-field excitation the thermal regime can be overcome, achieving a purely ...

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Combined Rehabilitation Promotes the Recovery of Structural and Functional Features of Healthy Neuronal Networks after Stroke

open access: yesCell Reports, 2019
Summary: Rehabilitation is considered the most effective treatment for promoting the recovery of motor deficits after stroke. One of the most challenging experimental goals is to unambiguously link brain rewiring to motor improvement prompted by ...

Organizing the interface—Plasma membrane architecture and receptor dynamics in virus‐cell interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Plasma membranes contain dynamic nanoscale domains that organize lipids and receptors. Because viruses operate at similar scales, this architecture shapes early infection steps, including attachment, receptor engagement, and entry. Using influenza A virus and HIV‐1 as examples, we highlight how receptor nanoclusters, multivalent glycan interactions ...

Cavity optomechanics in a fiber cavity: the role of stimulated Brillouin scattering

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2022
We study the role of stimulated Brillouin scattering in a fiber cavity by numerical simulations and a simple theoretical model and find good agreement between experiment, simulation and theory.

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

Ultra-fast force-clamp spectroscopy data on the interaction between skeletal muscle myosin and actin

open access: yesData in Brief, 2019
Ultrafast force-clamp spectroscopy is a single molecule technique based on laser tweezers with sub-millisecond and sub-nanometer resolution. The technique has been successfully applied to investigate the rapid conformational changes that occur when a ...

Geometrically robust linear optics from non-Abelian geometric phases

open access: yesPhysical Review Research, 2022
We construct a unified operator framework for quantum holonomies generated from bosonic systems. For a system whose Hamiltonian is bilinear in the creation and annihilation operators, we find a holonomy group determined only by a set of selected ...
