Nonlinear Loop Mirrors for All Optical Switching

Photonics in Switching, 1993
Optical fibres have brought an enormous benefit to telecommunications through their very low loss and high bandwidth. At present, these benefits are restricted to point to point transmission, the optical pipe. The next major challenge for optical technology is in the switching domain which is currently performed electrically.

Nonlinear-optical loop mirror

Optics Letters, 1988
A nonlinear device for ultrafast processing is proposed. This device is based on the nonlinear propagation in a waveguide loop formed by connecting the output ports of a conventional coupler. The device is shown to have potentially useful characteristics for unequal coupling ratios and has the ability to operate on entire pulses when soliton effects ...

Nonlinear Optical Loop Mirror for Waveband-Shift Free Optical Phase Conjugation

Optical Fiber Communication Conference (OFC) 2023, 2023
We experimentally demonstrate waveband-shift free optical phase conjugation by recombining signals and idlers at different output ports of a nonlinear optical loop mirror with idler-to-signal extinction ratio up to 18dB.

Nonlinear optical loop mirrors with feedback and a slow nonlinearity

Optics Communications, 1996
The fibre-based nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM)[1] has been one of the most successful devices for demonstrating a range of all-optical processing functions. Recently, the SLALOM [2] or TOAD [3] configuration has been developed where a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is used as the nonlinear material in a fibre loop, rather than the fibre ...

Noise filtering with the nonlinear optical loop mirror

Journal of Lightwave Technology, 1995
The operation of a nonlinear optical loop mirror as a passive and signal polarization independent noise filter, is investigated experimentally. Spontaneous emission not within the signal spectrum is rejected leaving a receiver noise limited solely by signal-spontaneous beat noise.
