A Digital Nonlinear Optical Loop Mirror Switch

Nonlinear Guided-Wave Phenomena, 1991
Ultrafast all-optical switching has been demonstrated in a number of silica fibre interferometric devices. In particular, the nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM), first fabricated by us, has been successfully used to demonstrate stable ultrafast multiplexing/de-multiplexing for high bit-rate optical fibre communication systems and for pulse shaping ...

Polarization independent nonlinear optical loop mirror

Conference Digest. 2000 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe (Cat. No.00TH8505), 2002
Summary form only given. Nonlinear optical loop mirrors (NOLMs), have been investigated in relation to such applications as optical switching, demultiplexing, phase conjugation, and fiber laser mode-locking. The experimental operation of a NOLM is complicated by the presence of both birefringence and optical activity induced by twist.

Soliton squeezing in a highly transmissive nonlinear optical loop mirror

Optics Letters, 1999
A perturbation approach is used to study the quantum noise of optical solitons in an asymmetric fiber Sagnac interferometer (a highly transmissive nonlinear optical loop mirror). Analytical expressions for the three second-order quadrature correlators are derived and used to predict the amount of detectable amplitude squeezing along with the optimum ...

Switch inversion and polarization sensitivity of the nonlinear-optical loop mirror

Optics Letters, 1992
The switching characteristic of a nonlinear-optical loop mirror can be inverted by a birefringent bias element. The device reflectance is insensitive to polarization in the linear regime for arbitrary birefringence in the loop. Under certain conditions, birefringence leads to polarization sensitivity in the nonlinear regime, which is likely to be ...

Normalized pulsed energy thresholding in a nonlinear optical loop mirror

Applied Optics, 2015
We demonstrate for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, that a Sagnac interferometer can threshold the energies of pulses. Pulses below a given threshold T are suppressed, while those above this threshold are normalized. The device contains an in-loop tunable isolator and 10.4 m of a highly doped silica fiber.

Optical Switching using the Nonlinear Optical Loop Mirror

Optical Amplifiers and Their Applications, 1993
Since the proposal of the nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM), or the Sagnac interferometer, about six years ago [1] and its first experimental demonstration [2], there has been a very rapid progress in the field of all-optical switching using the NOLM.

Nonlinear Optical Response of an Optical Fibre Loop Mirror Device

Nonlinear Guided-Wave Phenomena Physics and Applications, 1989
The advantages of all optical signal processing for high bit rate systems are increasingly being recognised and have stimulated interest in the demonstration of all-optical switching and logic operations. In particular optical fibres have been used to demonstrate optical switching by nonlinear polarisation rotation{1−3}, in the Mach-Zehnder ...

Optical switching with nonlinear optical loop mirror using nonlinear birefringence effect

Conference Proceedings. LEOS'98. 11th Annual Meeting. IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society 1998 Annual Meeting (Cat. No.98CH36243), 2002
We show that our scheme, which should formally employ a nearly isotropic fiber for a loop, can also have a switching action alternatively with birefringence fiber for the loop and therefore be more practical in an experiment. The device consists of a symmetric coupler, a birefringence fiber loop, and a set of asymmetrically located polarization ...

Elimination of acoustic sensitivity in nonlinear optical loop mirrors

Journal of Lightwave Technology, 1999
Acoustic disturbance is known to give rise to bit error rate (BER) floor when using the nonlinear optical loop mirror as a switch. Here, the acoustically induced penalty is investigated and >30 dB improvement in the acceptable acoustic sound pressure (50 Hz-5 kHz) is achieved by rewinding the loop fiber symmetrically.

Nonlinear fiber loop mirror with optical feedback

Optics Communications, 1994
Abstract The performance of a conventional nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) with optical feedback for cw radiation is theoretically investigated. The results indicate that the device shows the feature of single output for low input power, when the input power is increased to some extent a significant property as bistability occurs.
