A Novel OCDMA Thresholder Based on Nonlinear Polarization Rotation

2009 Symposium on Photonics and Optoelectronics, 2009
A novel low-power and cost-effective OCDMA thresholder based on nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) is proposed. The excellent performance and feasibility of the NPR thresholder are experimentally demonstrated in our 2.5 Gb/s ultrashort pulse OCDMA system.

Nonlinear polarization rotation and orthogonal polarization generation experienced in a single-beam configuration

Journal of the Optical Society of America B: Optical Physics, 2004
Nonlinear polarization rotation and generation of a polarization component orthogonal to the input beam were observed along fourfold axes of YVO4 and BaF2 crystals. We demonstrate experimentally that in both crystals the angle of rotation is proportional, at low intensities, to the square of the product of the input intensity and the crystal length and

INFLUENCE OF THE NONLINEAR POLARIZATION ROTATION ON A NONLINEAR FIBER LOOP

Journal of Nonlinear Optical Physics & Materials, 2006
A nonlinear fiber loop is considered including four-wave mixing terms. It is shown that these terms lead to considerable modification of the transmission coefficient of the nonlinear fiber loop. The transmission through an output polarizer is also investigated. Very irregular output intensity is obtained when the input intensity is increased.

Passive Polarization Rotators for Nonlinear Optical Devices

MRS Proceedings, 1997
AbstractInitial experiments of a passive polymeric TE-to-TM polarization converter that utilizes laterally offset upper and lower poling electrodes to induce a 45° optical axis in the core of a nonlinear optical polymer waveguide are reported. By optimizing the device length, we have demonstrated polarization conversion efficiencies greater than 95% in

Optical switching using nonlinear polarization rotation inside silicon waveguides

Optics Letters, 2009
We study the nonlinear polarization rotation induced by a pump pulse on a probe beam through cross-phase modulation inside a silicon waveguide and show that this phenomenon can be used to realize a fast Kerr shutter in spite of the free-carrier effects and walk-off.

Spike suppression in fiber amplifiers through nonlinear polarization rotation

Optics Letters, 2010
We report a pulse reshaping approach to suppress the harmful spike in fiber amplifiers. The approach is based on the nonlinear polarization rotation induced by the optical Kerr effect along the fiber. The feasibility and optimization of the pulse reshaping mechanism is analyzed theoretically and experimentally.

Nonlinear optical loop mirror using the nonlinear polarization rotation effect

Optics Communications, 1997
Abstract The effect of nonlinear polarization rotation in a fiber loop mirror constricted from a low-birefringent fiber was numerically examined. We have shown that it provides in itself the intensity variation of the transmission coefficient from 1 to 0 in the configuration with a 0.5 0.5 coupler and a birefringent bias rotating polarization ...

Elimination of nonlinear polarization rotation in twisted fibers

Journal of the Optical Society of America B, 1994
It has been previously reported that it is possible to eliminate nonlinear polarization rotation in elliptically birefringent optical fibers. We show that the same can hold true in twisted optical fibers, even though the local eigenmodes are linearly polarized, if the twist length becomes equal to 2 times the beat length.

Optimization of pulse shaping using nonlinear polarization rotation

Optics Communications, 1995
Pulse shaping using nonlinear polarization rotation has been analyzed in detail. It is found that there is an optimal, power-dependent polarization ellipticity for the maximum nonlinear transmission. It is also found that the polarization ellipticity should be kept smaller than 0.414 so that higher nonlinear transmission can be obtained.

Multiwavelength Fiber Laser Based on Nonlinear Polarization Rotation

Acta Optica Sinica, 2008
Multiwavelength fiber laser is a perfect light source for future wavelength-division-multiplexing optical communication systems. A multiwavelength fiber laser based on nonlinear polarization rotation with up to 18 wavelengths has been proposed and demonstrated.
