Photonic-assisted microwave frequency multiplier based on nonlinear polarization rotation
Optics Letters, 2014A photonic-assisted microwave frequency multiplier (MFM) based on the Kerr shutter is proposed and demonstrated. In this MFM, the nonlinear polarization rotation in the high nonlinear optical fiber is used for the first time to implement the light-controlled optical-carrier-suppressed modulation.

The polarization coupling length, an important parameter of the PMD probability distribution, is obtained from measurements and modeling of the nonlinear polarization rotation in optical fibers. Results for different types of fibers are presented.

Polarization rotation in nonlinear bimodal optical fibers
Journal of Lightwave Technology, 1989The current interest in lightwave polarization developement and nonlinear optics has centred on birefringent single-mode fibers [1]. We consider circular core fibers supporting second order modes. In the linear case a natural polarization rotation phenomenon occurs [2] and we describe its development as nonlinear effects become important.

Demonstration of simultaneous nonlinear polarization rotation and dispersive bistability
Nonlinear Optics (NLO), 2019We experimentally demonstrate the simultaneous occurrence of two nonlinear optical phenomena – nonlinear polarization rotation and dispersive optical bistabilty. The Stokes parameters exhibit bistable hystereses corresponding to a measured orthogonality of 30%.

Stable nonlinear optical loop mirror switching using polarization rotation
SPIE Proceedings, 2005We present experimental measurements and a corresponding theoretical analysis of a novel NOLM device made using a symmetrical (50/50) coupler, highly twisted fiber, and a quarter-wave (QW) retarder plate in the loop. The physical mechanism for the nonlinear properties is the polarization rotation of the counter-propagating optical fields.

Study of nonlinear polarization rotation in semiconductor optical amplifiers
OECC/ACOFT 2008 - Joint Conference of the Opto-Electronics and Communications Conference and the Australian Conference on Optical Fibre Technology, 2008We proposed a geometrical model to describe the NPR in SOA. There exists PSPv and PDGv. Their expressions with regard to parameters of SOA are obtained. Theoretical results accord well with the experimental data.

Ternary optical multiplier based on SOA's nonlinear polarization rotation
SPIE Proceedings, 2013Briefly compare the polarization rotation speed of Mach-Zehnder interferometer, lithium crystal, LCD and semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), etc. Then propose a program of high-speed ternary optical multiplier based on SOA’s nonlinear polarization rotation.

Ultrashort slot polarization rotator with double paralleled nonlinear geometry slot crossings
Optics Letters, 2013The polarization rotation of an optical slot structure from the vertical to the horizontal direction, or vice versa, is demonstrated theoretically within an ultrashort conversion length. Based on mode-evolution theory and three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain simulation, two parallel nonlinearly tapered crossings are introduced and optimized ...

Polarization-dependent output states of a fiber laser with nonlinear polarization rotation
Optical Engineering, 2008A fiber laser with two different polarization-dependent output states is demonstrated. On the one hand, intensity-dependent loss in a nonlinear optical loop mirror, induced by nonlinear polarization rotation, can balance mode competition of a homogeneous broadening gain medium, and thus allows for stable room-temperature multiwavelength generation.

By numerically solving the coupled laser Ginzburg-Landau equations and using the pulse tracing technique to incorporate the cavity effect in the simulation, we have explicitly calculated the soliton polarization ellipses throughout the cavity of a fiber-ring laser mode-locked by the nonlinear polarization rotation technique, and investigated the ...
