Viral interference with host mRNA surveillance, the nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) pathway, through a new function of HTLV-1 Rex: implications for retroviral replication

Microbes and Infection, 2013
Nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) is an essential and conserved cellular mRNA quality control mechanism. RNA signals to express viral genes from overlapping open reading frames potentially initiate NMD, nevertheless it is not clear whether viral RNAs are sensitive to NMD or if viruses have evolved mechanisms to evade NMD.

Identifying Cellular Nonsense-Mediated mRNA Decay (NMD) Targets: Immunoprecipitation of Phosphorylated UPF1 Followed by RNA Sequencing (p-UPF1 RIP−Seq)

2017
Recent progress in the technology of transcriptome-wide high-throughput sequencing has revealed that nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) targets ~10% of physiologic transcripts for the purpose of tuning gene expression in response to various environmental conditions.

The SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein inhibits the cellular Nonsense-Mediated mRNA Decay (NMD) pathway preventing the full enzymatic activation of UPF1

The Nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) pathway triggers the degradation of defective mRNAs and governs the expression of mRNAs with specific characteristics. Current understanding indicates that NMD is often significantly suppressed during viral infections to protect the viral genome.

Upregulation of a nonsense mediated decay (NMD) insensitive CFTR mRNA isoform has therapeutic potential for the treatment of 3’ CFTR PTC variants

AbstractBackgroundNonsense or Premature Termination Codon (PTC) mutations of theCFTRgene are pathogenic and found in ∼10% of North American people with cystic fibrosis. PTC mutations induce Nonsense-Mediated mRNA Decay (NMD), leading to a substantial (∼80-90%) reduction in full-length mRNA.
