Nontuberculous Mycobacteria, Botswana, 2011–2014

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2019
We documented a 6-fold increase in the frequency of nontuberculous mycobacteria isolated from clinical samples in Botswana during 2011–2014. Because antituberculosis treatment is often initiated only on the basis of acid-fast bacilli smear-positive ...

Catheter‐related blood stream infection caused by Mycobacterium chelonae in a child with myeloid leukemia associated with Down syndrome

open access: yesClinical Case Reports, 2021
Rapidly growing nontuberculous mycobacteria should be considered if GPRs gram‐positive rods are detected in blood cultures 2‐3 days after the blood sample collection.

A coiled‐coil domain triggers oligomerization of MmpL10, the mycobacterial transporter of trehalose polyphleate precursor

open access: yesFEBS Letters, Volume 599, Issue 12, Page 1682-1697, June 2025.
Most MmpLs transport lipids and glycolipids of the complex mycomembrane of mycobacteria. This study shows that MmpL10 from Mycobacterium smegmatis, the transporter of the trehalose polyphosphate precursor, harbors a coiled‐coil‐like extension. Biochemical and electron microscopy studies demonstrate that the coiled‐coil enables MmpL10 to trimerize.

Is Adenosine Deaminase in Pleural Fluid a Useful Marker for Differentiating Tuberculosis from Lung Cancer or Mesothelioma in Japan, a Country with Intermediate Incidence of Tuberculosis? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The objective of this study was to evaluate the utility of the determination of adenosine deaminase (ADA) level in pleural fluid for the differential diagnosis between tuberculous pleural effusion (TPE) and malignant pleural effusion (MPE) in Japan, a ...

T-Cell Exhaustion in Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Nontuberculous Mycobacteria Infection: Pathophysiology and Therapeutic Perspectives

open access: yesMicroorganisms, 2021
Immune exhaustion is a condition associated with chronic infections and cancers, characterized by the inability of antigen-specific T cells to eliminate the cognate antigen. Exhausted T cells display a peculiar phenotypic profile and exclusive functional

Nontuberculous Mycobacteria-Overview

open access: yesMicrobiology Spectrum, 2017
ABSTRACT Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are emerging pathogens that affect both immunocompromised and immunocompetent patients. The development of molecular methods has allowed the characterization of new species and the identification of NTM to the precise species and subspecies levels.

Silicosarcoidosis: Histologic and Clinical Features of an Occupational Granulomatous Disease

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Industrial Medicine, Volume 68, Issue 6, Page 491-507, June 2025.
ABSTRACT Sarcoidosis is a multisystem inflammatory disease of unknown etiology. Growing evidence indicates that occupational exposure to respirable crystalline silica (RCS) is associated with an increased incidence of sarcoidosis. Yet a diagnosis of sarcoidosis rarely prompts investigation to identify preventable exposures.

Evaluating the Sensitivity of Nontuberculous Mycobacterial Species Isolated from Water Samples to Conventional Antimycobacterial Drugs using E-Test Method

open access: yesمجله دانشکده پزشکی اصفهان, 2012
Background: Nontuberculous mycobacteria were only known as environmental bacteria. However, they have recently been identified as important pathogens due to the increased prevalence of immunodeficiency diseases.

Patients at risk of nontuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease who need testing evaluated using a modified Delphi process by European experts

open access: yesERJ Open Research
Background Identifying patients at risk of nontuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease (NTM-PD) is challenging. Delays in NTM-PD identification and management are associated with declining lung function and increased morbidity and mortality.

The Changing Pattern of Nontuberculous Mycobacterial Disease

open access: yesCanadian Journal of Infectious Diseases, 2003
Nontuberculous mycobacteria are human opportunistic pathogens whose source of infection is the environment. These include both slow-growing (eg, Mycobacterium kansasii and Mycobacterium avium) and rapid-growing (eg, Mycobacterium abscessus and ...
