Mesoscopic study on historic masonry

open access: yes, 2008
This paper presents a comprehensive approach to the evaluation of macroscopic material parameters for natural stone and quarry masonry. To that end, a reliable non-linear material model on a meso-scale is developed to cover the random arrangement of ...

Identifying transcription factors controlling the basal expression of human MRP4 highlights a substantial role for Sp1

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The MRP4 transporter exports several drugs and signaling molecules. Here, we identified key promoter elements regulating basal MRP4 expression. Using reporter assays, we defined a conserved region with essential Sp1 and contributory Ets sites, which controlled basal MRP4 expression.

Multiscale Identification of Parameters of Inhomogeneous Materials by Means of Global Optimization Methods

open access: yesEngineering Transactions, 2017
This paper deals with the identification of material parameters at a microscale on the basis of measurements at a macroscale. Inhomogeneous materials such as composites and porous media are considered.

Homogenization of the one-dimensional wave equation

open access: yes, 2013
We present a method for two-scale model derivation of the periodic homogenization of the one-dimensional wave equation in a bounded domain. It allows for analyzing the oscillations occurring on both microscopic and macroscopic scales.

Sudden anaerobization in Amphibacillus xylanus increases intracellular labile ferrous iron and inhibits cell growth

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Abruptly changing from aerobic to anaerobic conditions (sudden anaerobization) induced growth inhibition and a significant increase in intracellular labile ferrous iron in the aerotolerant anaerobe Amphibacillus xylanus. We found that free flavins mediate efficient electron transfer from NADH to ferric iron under anaerobic conditions, suggesting that ...

Impact of Morphological Parameters on the Elastic Properties of Composite Hydrogen Pipe [PDF]

open access: yesMATEC Web of Conferences
Advanced composite materials are increasingly used in hydrogen gas transport pipelines due to their excellent mechanical resistance, good corrosion resistance with lower density compared to steel material.

Cyclic azapeptide CD36 ligand attenuates cardiac injury and reduces long‐chain fatty acid accumulation after myocardial ischemia–reperfusion in mice

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In a murine model of myocardial ischemia and reperfusion (MI/R), the CD36 azapeptide ligand MPE‐298 reduces cardiac injury and transiently lowers left ventricular long‐chain fatty acids (LCFAs) accumulation 3 h after reperfusion, accompanied by a decrease of oxidative stress and inflammation‐associated genes' expression in the heart and adipose tissue.

Numerical aspects of computational homogenization

open access: yesComputer Methods in Materials Science, 2013
Computational homogenization enables replacement of a heterogeneous domain by an equivalent body with effective material parameters. Approach that we use is based on two-scale micro/macro analysis. In the micro-scale heterogeneous properties are collected in so-called representative volume elements (RVE), which are small enough to satisfy separation ...

A Systematic Comparison of Alpha‐Synuclein Seed Amplification Assays for Increasing Reproducibility

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Seed amplification assays (SAAs) enable ultrasensitive detection of misfolded α‐synuclein across biofluids and tissues. Yet, heterogeneity in protocols limits cross‐study comparability and clinical translation. Here, we review α‐synuclein SAA methods and their performance across various biological matrices.

Nonlinear nonlocal multicontinua upscaling framework and its applications

open access: yes, 2018
In this paper, we discuss multiscale methods for nonlinear problems. The main idea of these approaches is to use local constraints and solve problems in oversampled regions for constructing macroscopic equations.
