Enrichment protocols for human conjunctival extracellular vesicles and their characterization

open access: yesScientific Reports
The understanding of the role played by extracellular vesicles (EVs) in different tissues has improved significantly in the last years, but remains limited concerning the conjunctiva, a complex eye tissue whose role is pivotal for corneal protection ...

Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.

Relationships between ocular surface sphingomyelinases, Meibum and Tear Sphingolipids, and clinical parameters of meibomian gland dysfunction

open access: yes, 2022
Sphingolipids (SPL) are a class of lipid molecules that play important functional and structural roles in our body and are a component of meibum. Sphingomyelinases (SMases) are key enzymes in sphingolipid metabolism that hydrolyze sphingomyelin (SM) and ...

The role of miR‐335‐5p in the redifferentiation of BRAF p.V600E thyroid cancers

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The BRAF p.V600E mutation promotes thyroid cancer dedifferentiation and radioiodine resistance. Using a network approach, we identified miR‐335‐5p as a key regulator of BRAF‐mutated thyroid tumors. Restoring miR‐335‐5p increased thyroid‐specific gene expression and iodine uptake in cells and organoids.

Ageing and ocular surface immunity [PDF]

open access: yesBritish Journal of Ophthalmology, 2016
The prevalence of ocular surface immunopathologies is enhanced in the elderly. This increased prevalence has been attributed to age-related dysregulation of innate and adaptive immune system responses. Age-related changes in ocular surface immunity have similar and distinct characteristics to those changes seen in other mucosal tissues.

Dimethyl fumarate combined with cisplatin at subcytotoxic doses sensitizes cervical cancer toward ferroptosis and apoptosis through GSH restriction and p53 (re)activation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) reduces growth of HPV‐positive cervical cancer spheroids and induces ferroptosis in cervical cancer cells via blocking SLC7A11/Glutathione (GSH) axis. Combination of subcytotoxic doses of DMF and cisplatin (CDDP) further suppresses spheroid growth and drives cell death in 2D culture models.
