Neural Circuit Dynamics and Ensemble Coding in the Locust and Fruit Fly Olfactory System [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Raw sensory information is usually processed and reformatted by an organism’s brain to carry out tasks like identification, discrimination, tracking and storage.

An Environmental Nuisance: Odor Concentrated and Transported by Dust [PDF]

open access: yesChemical Senses, 2001
Intensive swine production generates odorous emissions which flow from the buildings housing the animals. High ventilation rates bring in fresh air, remove heat and moisture and enhance pork productivity. Numerous compounds contribute to the uniquely offensive odors from swine facilities, including fatty acids, amines, aromatics and sulfur compounds ...

Cognitive facilitation following intentional odor exposure

open access: yes, 2011
This paper reviews evidence that, in addition to incidental olfactory pollutants, intentional odor delivery can impact cognitive operations both positively and negatively.

Analysis of Odor Characteristics and Volatile Compounds During Spontaneous Combustion of Lignite

open access: yesTaiyuan Ligong Daxue xuebao, 2021
To explore the main substance components and their release rules that lead to the odor of spontaneous combustion of coal, the adsorption concentration technology was used to collect the volatile substances generated during coal oxidation.

Electronic Noses for Environmental Monitoring Applications

open access: yesSensors, 2014
Electronic nose applications in environmental monitoring are nowadays of great interest, because of the instruments’ proven capability of recognizing and discriminating between a variety of different gases and odors using just a small number of sensors.

The Performance of Olfactory Receptor Neurons: The Rate of Concentration Change Indicates Functional Specializations in the Cockroach Peripheral Olfactory System

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2020
Slow and continuous changes in odor concentration were used as a possible easy method for measuring the effect of the instantaneous concentration and the rate of concentration change on the activity of the olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) of basiconic ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

A transformation from temporal to ensemble coding in a model of piriform cortex

open access: yeseLife, 2018
Different coding strategies are used to represent odor information at various stages of the mammalian olfactory system. A temporal latency code represents odor identity in olfactory bulb (OB), but this temporal information is discarded in piriform cortex

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Odor identity coding by distributed ensembles of neurons in the mouse olfactory cortex

open access: yeseLife, 2017
Olfactory perception and behaviors critically depend on the ability to identify an odor across a wide range of concentrations. Here, we use calcium imaging to determine how odor identity is encoded in olfactory cortex.
