Enhancing saltiness perception by chemosensory interaction: an fMRI study

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2023
Neuroimaging studies that focus on taste, odor, and their interactions can specify their capability to elicit brain regions responsible for flavor perception and reward.

Emerging experimental and computational methods for studying redox‐regulated structural transitions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Redox reactions can reshape proteins and alter how they behave in cells, with important consequences for health and disease. This review explores emerging experimental and computational approaches for discovering these redox‐sensitive protein switches, revealing their structural effects, and predicting their behavior, opening new opportunities to ...

Odor-induced theta, beta, and gamma oscillations are evident across a range of olfactory tasks.

open access: yes, 2022
Shown are spectrograms from 2 participants (P8 and P9) who performed 3 different olfactory tasks including a detection task (top row), an edibility assessment task (middle row), and an odor naming task (bottom row).

Structural and biochemical analysis of a B12 superbinder

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
BtuG proteins are vitamin B12 scavengers in Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, a dominant human gut bacterium. We present crystal structures of three BtuG homologs bound to cobalamin and its precursor cobinamide, revealing picomolar binding affinities, among the highest known for any natural protein.

Odor-induced theta, beta, and gamma oscillations have different time courses relative to sniff onset.

open access: yes, 2022
(A) Percent-amplitude-change time series for odor (blue line) and no-odor (red line) conditions for each frequency band. Shaded areas indicate 1 standard error from the mean across all trials.

Behavioral and endocrine consequences of simultaneous exposure to two different stressors in rats: interaction or independence? [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2011
Although behavioral and endocrine consequences of acute exposure to stressors have been extensively studied, little is known about how simultaneous exposure to two different stressors interacts to induce short- and long-term effects.

The Shewanella oneidensis Fic enzyme SoFic targets the switch‐I region of EF‐Tu for AMPylation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fic enzymes mediate diverse post‐translational modifications across all domains of life, including AMPylation. Prokaryotic EF‐Tu can be AMPylated and deAMPylated by the conserved Fic enzyme SoFic. Structural and biochemical approaches were used to characterize the effect of AMPylation on EF‐Tu, SoFic's enzymatic activities, and the enzyme‐target ...

Chronic pain produces hypervigilance to predator odor in mice.

open access: yesCurrent Biology, 2020
The adaptive significance of acute pain (to withdraw from tissue-damaging or potentially tissue-damaging external stimuli, and to enhance the salience of the stimulus resulting in escape and avoidance learning) and tonic pain (to enforce recuperation by ...

The heterodimeric amino acid transporters (HAT) of the SLC7/SLC3 family: A structure−function relationships and relevance to human pathology

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Heterodimeric amino acid transporters consist of SLC7 and SLC3 family proteins arranged in a conserved structural organization. They regulate nutrient transport across cell membranes, supporting essential cellular functions. These transporters also contribute to xenobiotic/drug uptake and distribution.

Oscillatory Sequences of Firing in the Locust Olfactory System: Mechanisms and Functional Significance [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
What neural codes does the brain use to represent and process sensory information? Stimulus-evoked oscillatory synchronization of neuronal activity has been observed in many systems, yet the possible functions of such rhythmic synchronization in neural ...
