The Impact of Odors

open access: yesActa Polytechnica, 2002
The odor microclimate is formed by gaseous airborne components perceived either as an unpleasant smell or as a pleasant smell. Smells enter the building interior partly from outdoors (exhaust fumes - flower fragrance) and partly from indoors (building materials, smoking cigarettes - cosmetics, dishes).

Characterization and functional reconstruction of a highly productive germacrene A synthase from Liriodendron chinense

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, EarlyView.
Germacrene A Synthase (LcTPS3) from Liriodendron was characterized. The biosynthesis of germacrene A was achieved in a yeast chassis, and the catalytic mechanism of LcTPS3 was further elucidated. Summary Plants produce a large array of natural products which play important roles in flavours, fragrances and medicines.

Incretin hormones and obesity

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend The incretin system in obesity. The incretin hormones glucose‐dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) (yellow) and glucagon‐like peptide‐1 (GLP‐1) (blue) are produced by the proximal and distal small intestinal epithelium, where they are released postprandially into the bloodstream to modulate a myriad of physiological and ...

Can Wolf Predation Immediately Alter the Foraging Behavior of Beavers?: Video of a Wolf Killing a Foraging Beaver

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 5, May 2025.
Knowledge of wolf‐beaver interactions has largely been derived from indirect observations due to the cryptic nature of wolves and the densely forested areas where they regularly kill beavers. In September 2023, we opportunistically recorded a video on a remote camera of a wolf killing an adult beaver, providing direct evidence of how wolves kill ...

How does vortex dynamics help undulating bodies spread odor? [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
In this paper, we examine the coupling between odor dynamics and vortex dynamics around undulating bodies, with a focus on bio-inspired propulsion mechanisms. Utilizing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations with an in-house Immersed-Boundary Method (IBM) solver, we investigate how different waveform patterns, specifically carangiform and ...
