Variability and dynamics of old-growth forests in the circumboreal zone: implications for conservation, restoration and management

open access: yesSilva Fennica, 2011
Due to the unprecedented loss of old-growth forests to harvesting throughout circumboreal regions an understanding of similarities and differences in old-growth dynamics is needed to design effective restoration, management and conservation efforts ...

Environmental Stress Effects on Vigor, Mortality, and Growth in Northern Hardwood Forests Along a Pollution-Climate Gradient

open access: yes, 1998
Concern exists over the effects of interacting environmental stresses on the ecological integrity of temperate forests. Coincidence of sensitivity to drought, increasing occurrence of defoliation, and elevated pollutant deposition has produced ...

Chitosan‐Carbon Dot Composite Materials Form a Leaf Surface Barrier to Mitigate the Enrichment and Invasion of Nanoplastics: From Leaf Interface to Systemic Response

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Foliar spraying of CS‐CDs can form a film on the leaves of Brassica rapa, effectively reducing the enrichment and absorption of PS in the leaves, while increasing the biomass and nutrient content of the plants. In addition, CS‐CDs can also enrich the interfoliar microbial community and activate the plant's own defense metabolic pathways.

Living among Frequent-fire Forests: Human History and Cultural Perspectives

open access: yesEcology and Society, 2007
Ecological and social factors shaped old-growth forests of the western United States before Euro-American settlement, and will, in large part, determine their future.

ANXA2‐mediated Phagocytosis Generates AR+ Macrophages to Confer Enzalutamide Resistance in Prostate Cancer

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A novel resistance mechanism is mediated through phagocytosis of cancer cells by AR+ TAMs. This process, dependent on ANXA2, enables macrophages to acquire AR protein from engulfed tumor cells. The internalized AR translocates into the macrophage nucleus, where it binds directly to the IL‐6 promoter, augmenting IL‐6 transcription and secretion ...

Mapping of intact forest landscapes in Sweden according to Global forest watch methodology

open access: yes, 2012
Currently, most of the world’s forests are directly or indirectly affected by some kind of human activity. More people are getting concerned with the state of tropical forests.

Photodynamic Priming and Minocycline Overcome Chemoresistance by Reprogramming the Pancreatic Tumor Immune Microenvironment In Vivo

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Dual priming with minocycline and photodynamic priming reprograms the pancreatic tumor microenvironment to overcome chemoresistance. By suppressing DNA repair enzyme Tdp1, inducing photooxidative damage, and enhancing irinotecan delivery via light‐activated nanoencapsulation, this strategy remodels the tumor microenvironment and drives immune ...

Trophic position determines the persistence of neotropical understory birds after forest disturbance

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
Habitat loss and degradation are key drivers of the current biodiversity crisis. Most research focuses on the question of which traits allow species to persist in degraded habitats.
