Olfaction in mosquitoes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Female mosquitoes are vectors of diseases, affecting both livestock and humans. The host-seeking and identification behaviors of mosquitoes are mediated mainly by olfactory cues. The peripheral olfactory organs of mosquitoes which perceive olfactory cues

A study of the olfactory pathway

open access: yes, 2016
A study of the olfactory bulb in certain mammals by light and electron microscopy of normal and experimental material. The neurons of the glomerular layer of the rat olfactory bulb have been studied using Nissl staining and Golgi-Kopsch impregnation in light microscopy to define the size, shape, and morphological features of individual cell somata ...

Smart Nanotechnologies for Multimodal Neuromodulation and Brain Interfacing

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Recent advances in smart nanotechnologies are expanding the toolbox for brain interfacing, from wireless neuromodulation and high‐resolution sensing to targeted delivery within the central nervous system. By combining responsive nanomaterials with bioinspired design, these platforms enable multimodal interactions with neurons and glia, while also ...

Olfactory neural pathway in mouse hepatitis virus nasoencephalitis [PDF]

open access: yesActa Neuropathologica, 1988
The mechanism of brain infection with mouse hepatitis virus-JHM was studied in BALB/cByJ mice following intranasal inoculation, and found to be a consequence of direct viral spread along olfactory nerves into olfactory bulbs of the brain. Infection was followed sequentially from nose to brain, using microscopy, immunohistochemistry and virus ...

Multiparametric Bioresorbable Sensor for Doxorubicin Detection via Molecularly Imprinted Synthetic Receptors

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A biodegradable molecularly imprinted polymer porous silica sensor enables dual optical readout of doxorubicin via fluorescence and effective optical thickness shifts. The combined transduction mechanisms provide enhanced reliability and quantitative accuracy over clinically relevant concentrations, representing a step toward transient implantable ...

Investigating the use of olfactory cues to redirect elephant pathways in Makgadikgadi Pans, Botswana

open access: yesPachyderm
Human-elephant conflict poses a threat to both elephants and humans. This study explored the potential of using olfactory cues on African savannah elephant pathways (Loxodonta Africana), to divert elephants from crops and human settlements.

Neuromodulator Dynamics Underlying Associative Learning in the Ventral Striatum's Olfactory Tubercle

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Using fiber photometry and genetically encoded sensors, the dynamic release patterns of four neuromodulators in the olfactory tubercle (OT)—a brain region overlapping with the olfactory cortex and ventral striatum—were systematically monitored in response to external rewards and distinct reward‐associated learning processes.

Nicotine restores olfactory function by activation of prok2R/Akt/FoxO3a axis in Parkinson’s disease

open access: yesJournal of Translational Medicine
Background Olfactory dysfunction occurs frequently in Parkinson’s disease (PD). In this study, we aimed to explore the potential biomarkers and underlying molecular pathways of nicotine for the treatment of olfactory dysfunction in 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1, 2,

Identification of a novel Gnao-mediated alternate olfactory signaling pathway in murine OSNs

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular Neuroscience, 2016
It is generally agreed that in olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs), the binding of odorant molecules to their specific olfactory receptor (OR) triggers a cAMP-dependent signaling cascade, activating cyclic-nucleotide gated (CNG) channels.

Remote Magnetomechanical Neuromodulation Uncovers Therapeutic Mechanisms for Alleviating Parkinsonian Symptoms in Freely Moving Mice

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Magnetomechanical neuromodulation using magnetic nanodiscs enables remote activation of neurons. In a hemiparkinsonian mouse model, alternating magnetic fields actuate the nanodiscs to generate torque that opens mechanosensitive ion channels within the subthalamic nucleus, thereby modulating basal ganglia motor circuitry.
