Ultrastructure of the aesthetasc (olfactory) sensilla of the spiny lobster, Panulirus argus

The aesthetascs of the spiny lobster, Panulirus argus, are hair sensilla located on the lateral filaments of the antennules. Each hair is about 0.8 mm long and innervated by about 320 bipolar sensory neurons, the dendrites of which project as a bundle into the hair shaft. Each of the dendrites develops two cilia.

Abstract The antennal sensilla of male and female Pseudoperichaeta nigrolineata Walker (Diptera: Tachinidae) were studied by scanning electron microscopy. Five types of sensilla were identified on the funicle. The trichoid sensilla are most conspicuous, with a characteristic distal curvature and wall pores.

The olfactory plate organs found on the proximal segments of aphid antennae, the secondary rhinaria, were studied in apterae of the aphid Uroleucon ambrosiae. The numbers and shapes of these structures are important taxonomic characters in Aphididae, but they also show intraspecific variation within a morph.
