Endocannabinoid signaling in oligodendroglia
Glia, 2022AbstractIn the central nervous system, oligodendrocytes synthesize the myelin, a specialized membrane to wrap axons in a discontinuous way allowing a rapid saltatory nerve impulse conduction. Oligodendrocytes express a number of growth factors and neurotransmitters receptors that allow them to sense the environment and interact with neurons and other ...

Oligodendroglia in Developmental Neurotoxicity
NeuroToxicology, 2003The developing nervous system has been long recognized as a primary target for a variety of toxicants. To date, most efforts to understand the impact of neurotoxic agents on the brain have focused primarily on neurons and to a lesser degree astroglia as cellular targets.

Immunologic characterization of oligodendroglia
Neuroscience Letters, 1978Abstract Oligodendrocytes were isolated from bovine white matter by trypsinization and sucrose gradient centrifugation, and were injected into rabbits. Indirect immunofluorescence studies showed that antisera reacted specifically with the surface of isolated oligodendrocytes in suspension, as well as with perineural and interfasicular oligodendroglia

Ultrastructural evidence for phagocytosis by oligodendroglia
Neuroscience Letters, 1985Although the phagocytic ability of brain macrophages and astrocytes is well established, the question of whether oligodendrocytes may become phagocytic remains controversial. Observations reported here indicate that oligodendroglia may become activated and ingest degenerating or foreign material in vivo following experimental injury to the central ...

Oligodendrocytes are the myelinating cells of the CNS, producing the insulating myelin sheath that facilitates rapid electrical conduction of axonal action potentials. Oligodendrocytes arise from oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs) under the control of multiple factors, including neurotransmitters and other neuron-derived factors.

Oligodendrocytes, the myelin forming cells of the central nervous system, were isolated from bovine white matter by trypsinization and sucrose gradient centrifugation, according to the method of Poduslo and Norton (l). The isolated cells were characterized biochemically by their composition and specific activity of several enzymes (2), and ...

Induction of cerebroside synthesis in oligodendroglia
Neurochemical Research, 1990Oligodendroglia function to produce myelin membranes which surround axons, enhancing saltatory conduction. Myelin consists of a multitude of condensed membranes which are rich in lipids with the major glycolipids, cerebrosides, being 25% of the total lipid.

Vacuolation of oligodendroglia in neoplastic perifocal edema
Acta Neuropathologica, 1976Vacuolation of oligodendroglia, a new type of cytopathological change, has been described. The change is observed frequently at the perifocally edematous cerebral white matter adjacent to the metastatic lesions of carcinoma from the lung in all three cases examined. It is also present occasionally in association with astrocytoma.

Patterns of oligodendroglia pathology in multiple sclerosis
Brain, 1994Patterns of inflammation, demyelination and oligodendrocyte pathology were studied in acute multiple sclerosis and during early and late exacerbations of chronic multiple sclerosis. Cells within lesions were identified by immunocytochemistry with markers for T lymphocytes, macrophages, oligodendrocytes and astrocytes. In addition, in situ hybridization

Antibodies to Oligodendroglia in Patients with Multiple Sclerosis
New England Journal of Medicine, 1977We demonstrated antibodies to isolated oligodendrocytes and to oligodendroglia in brain sections by indirect immunofluorescence technic in serums of 19 of 21 patients with multiple sclerosis. We also found such antibodies in three of five patients with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis and one of four patients with acute disseminated ...
