Objective: Currently, there is a rapid increase in studies on assisted oocyte activation, which can significantly improve the process of in vitro fertilization. Fertilization of oocytes by conventional methods and by intracytoplasmic sperm injection can be affected by insufficient activation of the oocyte.

Artificial oocyte activation: physiological, pathophysiological and ethical aspects [PDF]
Infertile couples with low oocyte yield in combination with abnormal semen parameters may experience intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) failure. An established factor associated with ICSI failure is oocyte activation deficiency (AOD).

Activation of oocytes by latrunculin A
The FASEB Journal, 2002ABSTRACT Actin depolymerization by latrunculin A (LAT‐A) in mature starfish oocytes induces a massive calcium mobilization that results in the discharge of the cortical granules and in the elevation of the fertilization envelope.

Mammalian phospholipase Cζ induces oocyte activation from the sperm perinuclear matrix [PDF]
Mammalian sperm-borne oocyte activating factor (SOAF) induces oocyte activation from a compartment that engages the oocyte cytoplasm, but it is not known how.

Phospholipase Cζ rescues failed oocyte activation in a prototype of male factor infertility [PDF]
ObjectiveTo determine the effect of infertility-linked sperm phospholipase Cζ (PLCζ) mutations on their ability to trigger oocyte Ca2+ oscillations and development, and also to evaluate the potential therapeutic utility of wild-type, recombinant PLCζ ...

Gynogenetic Activation of Porcine Oocytes
Cellular Reprogramming, 2014The possibility of fertilization without male contribution to the embryonic genome was investigated in pig oocytes. Mature oocytes were co-incubated with sperm, and in an attempt to prevent the incorporation of the sperm head into the ooplasm, the actin polymerization inhibitor cytochalasin B was added to the fertilization medium.

Oolemma Receptors and Oocyte Activation
Systems Biology in Reproductive Medicine, 2010At fertilization the sperm triggers a series of intracellular calcium oscillations that are pivotal to oocyte activation and development. Although the biological significance of the characteristic intracellular calcium (Ca(2+)(i)) oscillations is not fully understood, calcium ions are known to be involved in cortical granule release and in controlling ...

Electrical activation of mouse oocytes
Theriogenology, 1989Activation of the oocyte is the least efficient step in nuclear transplantation in the rabbit. We report the influence of age of oocytes, field strength, pulse duration and number, and shape of field on the rate of activation of mouse oocytes by electrical pulses.

Parthenogenetic Activation of Oocytes
Cold Spring Harbor Protocols, 2018Numerous studies have been initiated to investigate the influence of maternal and paternal genomes on early mammalian development. For this type of study, parthenogenetic embryos provide a unique source of preimplantation and early postimplantation embryos that (by definition) develop in the absence of any contribution from a male gamete ...

Parthenogenetic activation of human oocytes by puromycin
Journal of Assisted Reproduction and Genetics, 1992Our objective was to obtain parthenogenetic activation of unfertilized human oocytes by puromycin and to try to use this procedure for cytogenetic purposes. The setting was our IVF laboratory.Eighty-two spare oocytes from 34 IVF patients were used. In the first series of experiments 39 unfertilized oocytes were cultured in medium containing 100, 50, or ...
