A Depolarizing Leak in Sodium Bicarbonate Cotransporter NBCe1 Causes Brain Edema

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives SLC4A4 encodes electrogenic sodium bicarbonate cotransporter NBCe1, prominently expressed in kidney and brain. Recessive loss‐of‐function variants in SLC4A4 cause proximal renal tubular acidosis, no brain edema. In the brain, NBCe1 is expressed by astrocytes, where it regulates pH and mediates astrocyte volume changes.

Updating the markers for oocyte quality evaluation: intracellular temperature as a new index

open access: yesReproductive Medicine and Biology, 2018
Background The developmental competence of an embryo is principally dictated by the oocyte. Usually, oocyte selection is based on morphological properties; however, all morphological criteria that are currently used for the grading and screening of ...

Fumonisin B1 exposure deteriorates oocyte quality by inducing organelle dysfunction and DNA damage in mice

open access: yesEcotoxicology and Environmental Safety, 2021
Oocyte quality is critical for fertilization and early embryo development. Fumonisin B1 (FB1) is a Fusarium mycotoxin and it is commonly found in contaminated food and feedstuff, posing a potential health hazard to both animals and human. FB1 is reported

M-phase promoting factor (MPF) and mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPK) activities of domestic cat oocytes matured in vitro and in vivo [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
This work was undertaken in order to examine M-phase promoting factor (MPF) and mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) activities during meiotic progression of cat oocytes cultured in two different media for two different incubation times and ...

Building a Framework for Sexual and Reproductive Health Care in the Rheumatology Context: Content and Approaches

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
People with systemic autoimmune and rheumatic diseases (SARDs) are at higher risk than the general population of experiencing adverse pregnancy and perinatal outcomes such as preeclampsia, intrauterine growth restriction, and maternal and/or fetal death.

Chenodeoxycholic acid improves oocyte maturation and embryo quality during bisphenol A exposure by activating the EGFR-ERK1/2 signaling pathway

open access: yesEcotoxicology and Environmental Safety
Chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) is a free bile acid present in the follicular fluid surrounding growing oocytes. In this study, we demonstrate that supplementation with CDCA activates the EGFR signaling in cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) to improve oocyte ...

Comparison of PUFA profiles in the blood and in follicular fluid and its association with follicular dynamics after PGF2α induced luteolysis in dairy cows [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The objectives of the present study were to examine the fatty acid (FA) profiles in serum and in the follicular fluid (FF) and the association between polyunsaturated fatty acid level (PUFA) and follicular growth dynamics following induced luteolysis in ...

The effects of vitrification on oocyte quality

open access: yesBiology of Reproduction, 2021
Abstract Vitrification, is an ultra-rapid, manual cooling process that produces glass-like (ice crystal-free) solidification. Water is prevented from forming intercellular and intracellular ice crystals during cooling as a result of oocyte dehydration and the use of highly concentrated cryoprotectant.

A Surface‐engineered Microfluidic Device for Antibody‐Mediated Negative Selection of High‐Quality Sperm for Assisted Reproduction

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study reports a microfluidic device with a functionalized surface utilizing a polyoxazoline coating and covalently immobilized gold nanoparticles and anti‐phosphatidylserine antibody. The device efficiently eliminates pre‐apoptotic and apoptotic spermatozoa and yields sperm with substantially improved quality and low DNA damage, offering a simple ...

Ovarian ageing and the impact on female fertility [version 1; referees: 2 approved]

open access: yesF1000Research, 2018
Female fertility decreases with increasing age, a reflection of declining oocyte quantity and quality. The menopausal transition occurs when the oocyte quantity falls below a threshold level.
