Selection indices for the improvement of opaque-2 maize

open access: yes, 2018
The interrelationships among agronomic, protein quality, and kernel quality characters in opaque-2 maize (Zea mays L.) require consideration of multiple traits in selection. Data from genetic studies in an opaque-2 maize synthetic were utilized to calculate selection indices for use in recurrent selection.

Vascularization of Human iPSC‐Derived Kidney Organoids Using Perfusion Culture, Pre‐Vascularized Collagen Scaffolds, and Decellularized Extracellular Matrix

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
An integrated perfusion‐based culture platform combining pre‐vascularized collagen scaffolds, stromal vascular fraction cells, and kidney decellularized extracellular matrix promotes vascularization of human iPSC‐derived kidney organoids. The platform provides evidence of interactions between vascular networks and glomerular‐like structures and enables

Imperfections in transparency and mimicry do not increase predation risk for clearwing butterflies with educated predators

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
Transparency is an intuitive form of concealment and, in certain butterflies, transparent patches on the wings can contribute to several distinct forms of camouflage.

Proteomic comparisons of opaque and transparent variants of Streptococcus pneumoniae by two dimensional-differential gel electrophoresis

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
Streptococcus pneumoniae (the pneumococcus) is a human pathogen, accounting for massive global morbidity and mortality. Although asymptomatic colonization of the nasopharynx almost invariably precedes disease, the critical determinants enabling ...

Patterned ELR‐Gelatin Hydrogels Enable Rapid Endothelial Monolayer Formation via Bioactive Matrix Chemistry and Surface Topography

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Micro‐ and nano‐patterned elastin‐like recombinamer (ELR) hydrogels integrate bioactive matrix chemistry with defined surface topography. The combined cues promote rapid endothelial cell capture, alignment, and monolayer formation on soft substrates.

Oxygels: Tunable Phosphorescent Hydrogels for Cherenkov‐Excited Luminescence Imaging (CELI) of Oxygen

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Biocompatible hydrogels with covalently embedded near‐infrared phosphorescent probes enable local tissue pO2 quantification by means of Cherenkov‐excited luminescence imaging (CELI), where optical excitation occurs within tissues upon irradiation with high‐energy electron beams.

Development of Miniaturized Fiber-Optic Laser Doppler Velocimetry Sensor for Measurement of Local Blood Velocity

open access: yesJournal of Fluid Science and Technology, 2009
A new miniaturized fiber-optic laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) sensor has been developed, which is capable of measuring the local velocity in various semi-opaque and opaque fluid flows, particularly whole blood velocity in vessels.

Biphasic Co‐Delivery of Curcumin and 5‐FU using 3D‐Printed Dissolving Microneedles for Skin Cancer Therapy

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Using pixel‐aware digital light processing, the authors created high‐resolution, dissolvable microneedles from a PEGDA/VP matrix. These microneedles encapsulate curcumin and 5‐fluorouracil and dissolve in the skin, co‐delivering drugs directly to tumours.

High Light Utilization and Color Rendering in Vacuum‐Deposited Semitransparent Perovskite Solar Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
In this work, low bandgap (≈1.55 eV) semitransparent perovskite solar cells (ST‐PSCs) having thin (thickness < ≈100 nm) perovskite layers and transparent conductive oxide‐based rear electrodes are fabricated using vacuum‐deposition methods. Two different ST‐PSCs demonstrated a high light utilization efficiency value of 4.2 (PCE: 9.26% and AVT: 45.3 ...

An Exome-seq Based Tool for Mapping and Selection of Candidate Genes in Maize Deletion Mutants

open access: yesGenomics, Proteomics & Bioinformatics, 2018
Despite the large number of genomic and transcriptomic resources in maize, there is still much to learn about the function of genes in developmental and biochemical processes.
