Support mechanisms provided by FLOSS foundations and other entities

open access: yesJournal of Internet Services and Applications, 2018
Foundations function as a vital institutional support infrastructure for many of the most successful open-source projects, but the different roles played by these support entities are understudied in Free/Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS) research ...

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.

Vulnerable Open Source Dependencies: Counting Those That Matter

open access: yes, 2018
BACKGROUND: Vulnerable dependencies are a known problem in today's open-source software ecosystems because OSS libraries are highly interconnected and developers do not always update their dependencies.

Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

The anti‐CRISPR protein AcrIE8.1 inhibits the type I‐E CRISPR‐Cas system by directly binding to the Cascade subunit Cas11

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we present the structure of AcrIE8.1, a previously uncharacterized anti‐CRISPR protein that inhibits the type I‐E CRISPR‐Cas system. Through a combination of structural and biochemical analyses, we demonstrate that AcrIE8.1 directly binds to the Cas11 subunit of the Cascade complex to inhibit the CRISPR‐Cas system.

Open standards / open source

open access: yes, 2003
James Dalziel, Open Standards Versus Open Source in E-Learning, Educause Quarterly , 4 (2003) pp. 4-7. Not on open access, but a good discussion these two kindred concepts, showing for example how priced and closed-source software can comply with open standards.
