Spectrophotometric Determination of the Principal Alkaloids of Opium

Journal of the American Pharmaceutical Association (Scientific ed.), 1955
The spectra of four opium alkaloids; narceine, narcotine, papaverine, and thebaine with its acid decomposition products, were determined at various p H values. A method of assay for samples of opium concentrates is proposed that requires less time and a smaller sample than the existing methods.

Analysis of alkaloids in opium

Journal of Chromatography A, 1984
Abstract A rapid analytical procedure for the separation and quantification of the major alkaloids of opium is reported. Separation was effected by Celite column chromatography. Codeine, thebaine, papaverine, and noscapine were eluted in one fraction with an ether—light petroleum (b.p.

Opium alkaloids V. Structure of porphyroxine

Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 1967
Porphyroxine is a monophenolic alkaloid isolated from opium. It contains a methyl acetal group and has three asymmetric centers. The position of the phenolic hydroxyl group has been determined by NMR spectroscopy. Evidence has been presented for the configuration at position-14.

Opium alkaloids IV. Isolation of isoboldine

Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 1967
The aporphine alkaloid isoboldine has been isolated from opium. It has been identified by NMR and mass spectrometry and by comparison of its infrared spectrum with that of synthetic (±)-isoboldine. ORD measurements have shown that the isolated alkaloid has the absolute configuration corresponding to the ( S )-series.

Opium Alkaloids XV: Isolation of Stepholidine

Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 1975
A protoberberine alkaloid was isolated from opium and characterized as (-) 2, 10-dihydroxy-3,9-dimethoxytetrahydroprotoberberine by spectroscopic methods and by comparison with (-) stepholidine.

A study of the alkaloids of Kirghiz opium

Chemistry of Natural Compounds, 1970
Morphine, codeine, narcotine, thebaine, papaverine, protopine, xanthaline, prophyroxine, bases with mp 267 and 263°C,l-canadine, and cryptopine have been isolated from Kirghiz opium.

A QUANTITATIVE STUDY OF THE ANALGESIA PRODUCED BY OPIUM ALKALOIDS, INDIVIDUALLY AND IN COMBINATION WITH EACH OTHER, IN NORMAL MAN

Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, 1916
1. A convenient method for studying cutaneous pain sensation in man quantitatively and expressing the results in absolute physical units has been described. 2.
