Refining the NaV1.7 pharmacophore of a class of venom‐derived peptide inhibitors via a combination of in silico screening and rational engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Venom peptides have shown promise in treating pain. Our study uses computer screening to identify a peptide that targets a sodium channel (NaV1.7) linked to chronic pain. We produced the peptide in the laboratory and refined its design, advancing the search for innovative pain therapies.

A Disc-Corona Model for a Rotating Black Hole [PDF]

open access: yesMon. Not. R. Astron. Soc., 2012, 420: 1415-1422, 2012
We propose a disc-corona model in which a geometrically thin, optically thick disc surrounds a Kerr black hole, and magnetic fields exert a time-steady torque on the inner edge of the accretion disc. The analytical expression of the total gravitational power is derived from the thin-disc dynamics equations by using this new boundary condition.

High-Resolution Imaging of the Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer in Normal Eyes Using Adaptive Optics Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscopy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
To conduct high-resolution imaging of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) in normal eyes using adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (AO-SLO).AO-SLO images were obtained in 20 normal eyes at multiple locations in the posterior polar area and a ...

The Saccharomyces cerevisiae amino acid transporter Lyp1 has a broad substrate spectrum

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Yeast Amino acid Transporter family members mediate the import of amino acids, ranging from substrate specialists to generalists. Here, we show that the specialist transporter, Lyp1, has a broader substrate spectrum than previously described, with affinity constants spanning from micromolar to millimolar.

Optic disc and cup segmentation for glaucoma detection using Attention U-Net incorporating residual mechanism [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ Computer Science
Glaucoma is a common eye disease that can cause blindness. Accurate detection of the optic disc and cup disc is crucial for glaucoma diagnosis. Algorithm models based on artificial intelligence can assist doctors in improving detection performance.

Social context prevents heat hormetic effects against mutagens during fish development

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study shows that sublethal heat stress protects fish embryos against ultraviolet radiation, a concept known as ‘hormesis’. However, chemical stress transmission between fish embryos negates this protective effect. By providing evidence for the mechanistic molecular basis of heat stress hormesis and interindividual stress communication, this study ...
