Spotlight on nerves: Portable multispectral optoacoustic imaging of peripheral nerve vascularization and morphology [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2022
Various morphological and functional parameters of peripheral nerves and their vascular supply are indicative of pathological changes due to injury or disease. Based on recent improvements in optoacoustic image quality, we explore the ability of multispectral optoacoustic tomography, in tandem with ultrasound imaging (OPUS), to investigate the vascular

Optic Disc and Cup Segmentation Methods for Glaucoma Detection with Modification of U-Net Convolutional Neural Network [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness all over the world, with approximately 60 million cases reported worldwide in 2010. If undiagnosed in time, glaucoma causes irreversible damage to the optic nerve leading to blindness. The optic nerve head examination, which involves measurement of cup-to-disc ratio, is considered one of the most ...

Escape from TGF‐β‐induced senescence promotes aggressive hallmarks in epithelial hepatocellular carcinoma cells

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Chronic TGF‐β exposure drives epithelial HCC cells from a senescent state to a TGF‐β resistant mesenchymal phenotype. This transition is characterized by the loss of Smad3‐mediated signaling, escape from senescence, enhanced invasiveness and metastatic potential, and upregulation of key resistance modulators such as MARK1 and GRM8, ultimately promoting

Adenosine A3 receptor antagonists as anti‐tumor treatment in human prostate cancer: an in vitro study

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The A3 adenosine receptors (A3ARs) are overexpressed in prostate cancer. AR 292 and AR 357, as A3AR antagonists, are capable of blocking proliferation, modulating the expression of drug transporter genes involved in chemoresistance, ferroptosis, and the hypoxia response, and inducing cell death.

Implementation of needle‐tracking technology for real‐time transrectal ultrasound‐guided interstitial gynecological HDR brachytherapy: A feasibility study

open access: yesJournal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics, EarlyView.
Abstract Purpose To investigate the feasibility of adapting a commercial prostate biopsy system for transrectal ultrasound (TRUS)‐guided hybrid gynecological (GYN) high‐dose‐rate (HDR) brachytherapy (BT). Leveraging 3D‐TRUS and MR image fusion, the prototype system aims to improve real‐time needle placement accuracy.

TRPV1 Tunes Optic Nerve Axon Excitability in Glaucoma

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2020
The transient receptor potential vanilloid member 1 (TRPV1) in the central nervous system may contribute to homeostatic plasticity by regulating intracellular Ca2+, which becomes unbalanced in age-related neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s

AAPM Task Group No. 249.B—Essentials and guidelines for clinical medical physics residency training program

open access: yesJournal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics, EarlyView.
Abstract The establishment of guidelines and curriculum standards for medical physics residency training is a critical component of setting expectations and competencies for the profession. Since the last publication of these standards, residency training has become integrated into the eligibility criteria for most medical physics certification bodies.
