Coherent Optical Amplifier.

Coherent optical amplifiers intensify the amplitude of the component which has a given optical phase and attenuate the amplitude of the component which has the optical phase orthogonal to the 'amplified phase'. Principles, effectiveness in the optical transmission and current status of experimental demonstrations of the coherent amplifiers are reviewed.
