In this paper we study the optimal control of a parabolic initial-boundary value problem of Allen--Cahn type with dynamic boundary conditions. Phase field systems of this type govern the evolution of coupled diffusive phase transition processes with ...

The physical dimensions and shape of bacterial cells define the surface area available to acquire nutrients and the volume available for synthesizing proteins and DNA. Here, we use computational systems biology to decode the importance of cell geometry as a major determinant of prokaryotic phenotype, including growth rate and metabolic efficiency. This

Quasi-optimal control of a solar thermal system via neural networks
The optimal control of complex thermal energy systems is a challenge due to their dynamic behavior and constantly changing boundary conditions. To maximize the energy efficiency of such a dynamic system, optimal trajectories for the controlled variables ...

Numerical Study of the Effect of Freestream Turbulence on by-pass Transition in a Boundary Layer [PDF]
We use direct numerical simulations in the presence of free-stream turbulence having different values of intensity, T u, and integral length scale, L, in order to determine which kind of structures are involved in the path to transition of a boundary ...

We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

Energy-optimal steering of transitions through a fractal basin boundary. [PDF]
We study fluctuational transitions in a discrete dy- namical system having two co-existing attractors in phase space, separated by a fractal basin boundary. It is shown that transitions occur via a unique ac- cessible point on the boundary.

Optimal control of non-stationary differential linear repetitive processes
Differential repetitive processes are a distinct class of continuous discrete 2D linear systems of both systems theoretic and applications interest. The feature which makes them distinct from other classes of such systems is the fact that information ...

Analysis and optimal boundary control of a nonstandard system of phase field equations [PDF]
We investigate a nonstandard phase field model of Cahn-Hilliard type. The model, which was introduced in Podio-Guidugli (2006), describes two-species phase segregation and consists of a system of two highly nonlinearly coupled PDEs.

Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.

CT10 regulator of kinase (CRK) and CRK‐Like (CRKL) are signaling adaptors driving cell adhesion, motility, differentiation, and proliferation. SH2‐domain containing (SH) proteins are enriched in YXXP motifs which when phosphorylated create preferred binding sites for CRK family SH2 domains.
