A preliminary assessment of water quality in fish cages on Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe [PDF]
The water quality in fish cages on Lake Kariba was studied. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to determine whether the water quality parameters differed significantly among the cage-types (cage-type effect). Secchi disc readings ranged from 2 to 4 metres,

Improving chlorine dioxide bleaching efficiency by selecting the optimum pH targets
When operating chlorine dioxide (D) bleaching stages under mill conditions, it is important to establish reasonable operating targets and ranges. We examined the relationship between optimum pH, acceptable range for pH control, bleaching efficiency, and ...

The ‘pH optimum anomaly’ of intracellular enzymes of Ferroplasma acidiphilum [PDF]
Summary A wide range of microorganisms, the so‐called acidophiles, inhabit acidic environments and grow optimally at pH values between 0 and 3. The intracellular pH of these organisms is, however, close to neutrality or slightly acidic.

This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

A parametric evaluation of the removal as(III) and as(V) from aqueous water by red mud [PDF]
In the present study, removal of arsenide (As(III)) and arsenate As(V) ions from water/wastewater by adsorption on red mud is investigated. Laboratory experiments were carried out to analyze removal capacity of the adsorbents, to achieve adsorption ...

In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...
