The very large G-protein coupled receptor VLGR1: a component of the ankle link complex required for the normal development of auditory hair bundles [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Sensory hair bundles in the inner ear are composed of stereocilia that can be interconnected by a variety of different link types, including tip links, horizontal top connectors, shaft connectors, and ankle links.

Variation in prevalence and intensity of macroparasites in moose and their interactions with winter tick load in eastern Canada

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Wild animals are infected with a large diversity and abundance of parasites that can affect their behavior, growth, body condition, and ultimately their survival. Although the adverse effects of parasites and the mechanisms involved in the interactions between a host and its parasites are generally well studied, much less is known about the additive or

Cochlear progenitor number is controlled through mesenchymal FGF receptor signaling

open access: yeseLife, 2015
The sensory and supporting cells (SCs) of the organ of Corti are derived from a limited number of progenitors. The mechanisms that regulate the number of sensory progenitors are not known.

Selective deletion of cochlear hair cells causes rapid age-dependent changes in spiral ganglion and cochlear nucleus neurons [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
During nervous system development, critical periods are usually defined as early periods during which manipulations dramatically change neuronal structure or function, whereas the same manipulations in mature animals have little or no effect on the same ...

A pan‐European citizen science study shows population size, climate and land use are related to biased morph ratios in the heterostylous plant Primula veris

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, EarlyView.
A large‐scale citizen science study involving thousands of cowslip (Primula veris) observations from all over Europe revealed an unexpected prevalence of S‐morphs over L‐morphs, which was influenced by climatic as well as land use factors. Furthermore, general morph ratios were often unbalanced with the strongest shifts occurring in smaller populations.

Mechanism of sound susceptibility in organ of Corti - inference of contrary recruitment phenomenon (hypothesis) and the application to diagnosis -. [PDF]

open access: yes, 1975
In order to make the mechanism concerned with the sound-susceptibility in the organ of Corti clear, we observed the organ of Corti with the phase-contrast microscope, after the microdissection of the cochleae in human, dogs, guinea pigs and hamsters by ...

Transforming Growth Factor‐β‐Activated Protein 1 (TAK1) Regulates Necroptosis in Age‐Related Hearing Loss

open access: yesAging Cell, EarlyView.
TAK1‐mediated necroptotic pathways play an important role in the pathogenesis of ARHL. ABSTRACT Inflammation plays an important role in age‐related hearing loss (ARHL). Transforming growth factor‐β‐activated protein 1 (TAK1), a key factor upstream of inflammatory pathways, mediates various cell death pathways, potentially influencing the survival and ...

Force on inner hair cell cilia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
The cochlea of the inner ear transforms the incoming sound pressure into neural excitation. Despite extensive experiments and modeling for the past century, understanding the behavior of the cochlea is far from complete. With an efficient program (Fast4)

DLK/JNK3 Upregulation Aggravates Hair Cell Senescence in Mice Cochleae via Excessive Autophagy

open access: yesAging Cell, EarlyView.
In normal physiological processes, autophagy acts as a protective factor against aging stress. With the stress increase, the DLK/JNK3 pathway is activated and autophagy is continuously upregulated. In our study, excessive autophagy leads to hair cell senescence, which reveals that excessive autophagy can play a harmful role in senescence under certain ...

The Key Transcription Factor Expression in the Developing Vestibular and Auditory Sensory Organs: A Comprehensive Comparison of Spatial and Temporal Patterns

open access: yesNeural Plasticity, 2018
Inner ear formation requires that a series of cell fate decisions and morphogenetic events occur in a precise temporal and spatial pattern. Previous studies have shown that transcription factors, including Pax2, Sox2, and Prox1, play important roles ...
