Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells alleviate liver fibrosis after rat liver transplantation through JAK1/STAT5 pathway

open access: yesStem Cell Research & Therapy
Objective The effectiveness of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) in post-transplantation liver fibrosis has not been studied. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of BMSCs on liver fibrosis and their role in the Janus-activated ...

Preparation and characterization of small-diameter decellularized scaffolds for vascular tissue engineering in an animal model

open access: yesBioMedical Engineering OnLine, 2017
Background The development of a suitable extracellular matrix (ECM) scaffold is the first step in vascular tissue engineering (VTE). Synthetic vascular grafts are available as an alternative to autologous vessels in large-diameter arteries (>8 mm) and ...

An international comparison of deceased and living organ donation/transplant rates in opt-in and opt-out systems: a panel study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Background: Policy decisions about opt-in and opt-out consent for organ donation are based on limited evidence. To fill this gap we investigated the difference between deceased and living organ donation rates in opt-in and opt-out consent systems across ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Identification of ubiquitination-related signature genes for predicting kidney transplant rejection

open access: yesScientific Reports
Kidney transplant rejection (KTR) poses significant challenges to long-term graft survival, with involvement from ubiquitination-related genes (URGs) in immune modulation. This study aimed to identify key URGs linked to KTR and develop a predictive model

Porcine anti-human lymphocyte immunoglobulin depletes the lymphocyte population to promote successful kidney transplantation

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2023
IntroductionPorcine anti-human lymphocyte immunoglobulin (pALG) has been used in kidney transplantation, but its impacts on the lymphocyte cell pool remain unclear.MethodsWe retrospectively analyzed 12 kidney transplant recipients receiving pALG, and ...

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Impact of para aortic lymph node removal on survival following resection for pancreatic adenocarcinoma

open access: yesBMC Surgery, 2023
Introduction For PDAC patients undergoing resection, it remains unclear whether metastases to the paraaortic lymph nodes (PALN+) have any prognostic significance and whether metastases should lead to the operation not being carried out. Our hypothesis is
