Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Effect of organic acids on the growth and lipid accumulation of oleaginous yeast Trichosporon fermentans

open access: yesBiotechnology for Biofuels, 2012
Background Microbial lipids have drawn increasing attention in recent years as promising raw materials for biodiesel production, and the use of lignocellulosic hydrolysates as carbon sources seems to be a feasible strategy for cost-effective lipid ...

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Correlation between bacterial communities and organic acids in the fermentation stage of traditional Chinese sour porridge

open access: yesInternational Journal of Food Properties, 2020
Fermented porridge is usually made though the process of natural fermentation of grains with higher starch. Organic acids are the main flavor compounds in fermented porridge. However, the understanding of the correlation between the microbial communities

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Production of Valuables Organic Acids from Organic Wastes with Hydrothermal Treatment Process

open access: yesJurnal Rekayasa Kimia & Lingkungan, 2009
This article reports production of valuables organic acids from the hydrothermal treatment of representative organic wastes and compounds (i. e. domestic sludge, proteinaceous, cellulosic and plastic wastes) with or without oxidant (H2O2).
