Hijacking emergency granulopoiesis: Neutrophil ontogeny and reprogramming in cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Neutrophils are highly plastic innate immune cells; their functions in cancer extend beyond the tumour microenvironment. This Review summarises current understanding of neutrophil maturation and heterogeneity and highlights tumour‐induced granulopoiesis as a systemic programme that expands immature, immunosuppressive neutrophils via tumour‐derived ...

Metastasis on pause: How dormant tumor cells stay hidden within the tumor microenvironment and evade immune surveillance

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Dormant cancer cells can hide in distant organs for years, evading treatment and the immune system. This review highlights how signals from the surrounding tissue and immune environment keep these cells inactive or trigger their reawakening. Understanding these mechanisms may help develop therapies to eliminate or control dormant cells and prevent ...

Food Safety Debate and Development of Standards/Regulations for Organic Farming and Organic Food

open access: yes, 2002
There is an on-going debate, in which way Organic Food production systems do contribute to food safety. Only few comparative studies do exist. However Organic Farming developed a system approach which is mainly focussing on the process of production ...

Plant uptake of non-ionic organic chemicals

open access: yes, 2006
Plant uptake of organic chemicals is an important process when considering the risks associated with land contamination, the role of vegetation in the global cycling of persistent organic pollutants, and the potential for industrial discharges to ...

Circulating tumor cell viability during and after radiotherapy mirrors treatment response in cancer patients

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Radiotherapy (RT) response depends on the DNA repair capacity of tumor and host cells. We show that circulating tumor cell (CTC) counts and apoptosis rates before and after RT predict treatment response and outcome, which can be accessed via easily accessible liquid biopsy approaches. ProPIG - Organic pig health, welfare and environmental impact across Europe

open access: yes, 2012
Organic production is perceived by consumers as being superior in animal welfare and sustainability and the demand for organic pork products is slowly increasing. Within the past ten years a variety of husbandry and management systems have been developed

Standardization of activated sludge for biodegradation tests [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Activated sludges are an inoculum source commonly used in biodegradation studies, as wastewater treatment facilities constitute an entry point to the environment for many chemicals.

Synthesis, characterization, and crystal structure of 2-(2-azidophenyl)-3-oxo-3H-indole 1-oxide

open access: yesActa Crystallographica Section E: Crystallographic Communications
An attempt to explore the reactivity of the nitro group in the presence of gold catalysis in comparison to the azide group yielded intriguing results. Surprisingly, only the nitro group exhibited reactivity, ultimately giving rise to the formation of the

The chemical organization of signaling interactions

open access: yesBioinformatics, 2002
Abstract Motivation: Cellular chemical signaling pathways form complex networks that are beginning to be studied at the level of chemical kinetics and databases of reactions. Chemical reaction details are traditionally represented as lists of reactions and rates.
