We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

Helicobacter pylori Outer Membrane Protein-Related Pathogenesis
Helicobacter pylori colonizes the human stomach and induces inflammation, and in some cases persistent infection can result in gastric cancer. Attachment to the gastric mucosa is the first step in establishing bacterial colonization, and outer membrane ...

A Msp1-containing complex removes orphaned proteins in the mitochondrial outer membrane of T. brucei
Disruption of mitochondrial outer membrane protein biogenesis triggers a pathway leading to proteasomal degradation of orphan outer membrane proteins mediated by Msp1 and three interacting proteins.

Bioengineering bacterial outer membrane vesicles as vaccine platform.
Outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) are naturally non-replicating, highly immunogenic spherical nanoparticles derived from Gram-negative bacteria. OMVs from pathogenic bacteria have been successfully used as vaccines against bacterial meningitis and sepsis ...

Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.

Imaging and 3D reconstruction of membrane protein complexes by cryo-electron microscopy and single particle analysis [PDF]
Cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) in combination with single particle image processing and volume reconstruction is a powerful technology to obtain medium-resolution structures of large protein complexes, which are extremely difficult to crystallize and ...

Outer membrane vesicles from Neisseria gonorrhoeae target PorB to mitochondria and induce apoptosis
Neisseria gonorrhoeae causes the sexually transmitted disease gonorrhoea by evading innate immunity. Colonizing the mucosa of the reproductive tract depends on the bacterial outer membrane porin, PorB, which is essential for ion and nutrient uptake. PorB

Aptamers are used both therapeutically and as targeting agents in cancer treatment. We developed an aptamer‐targeted PLGA–TRAIL nanosystem that exhibited superior therapeutic efficacy in NOD/SCID breast cancer models. This nanosystem represents a novel biotechnological drug candidate for suppressing resistance development in breast cancer.

A bacterial membrane sculpting protein with BAR domain-like activity
Bin/Amphiphysin/RVS (BAR) domain proteins belong to a superfamily of coiled-coil proteins influencing membrane curvature in eukaryotes and are associated with vesicle biogenesis, vesicle-mediated protein trafficking, and intracellular signaling. Here, we
