Reproduction and ovarian ageing
British Menopause Society Journal, 2005Female fertility rates are inherently linked to a woman's age, which is in turn related to ovarian function. Reproductive potential declines gradually until 37–38 years of age, from when the rate of decline hastens. Approximately 1% of women suffer from premature ovarian ageing, and many may not have completed their families.

Aging and Ovarian Steroidogenesis in the Rat
Journal of Gerontology, 1977Ovaries obtained from rats of 4 and 18 mo of age were incubated in vitro with 3H-pregnenolone as the added precursor. Incorporation of radioactivity into progesterone (P), 20alpha-dihydroprogesterone (20alpha-P), 17alpha-hydroxyprogesterone (17alpha-OHP), androstenedione, and testosterone were studied by serial paper and thin-layer chromatography ...

Models and Biomarkers for Ovarian Ageing
2023The human ovarian reserve is defined by the number of non-growing follicles (NGFs) in the ovary, with the age-related decline in NGF population determining age at menopause for healthy women. In this chapter, the concept of ovarian reserve is explored in detail, with a sequence of models described that in principle allow any individual to be compared ...
