Myositis-overlap syndromes are characterized by a heterogeneous group of clinical syndromes of which many are closely linked with specific autoantibodies. Clinical and laboratory-based research into this fascinating group of syndromes have given us clues in elucidating the role of immunogenetic, environmental influences on the etiopathogenesis of ...

A 45-year-old woman developed cold paraesthesias, severe pain in the finger-tips of both hands and acral necroses, at first pinhead-sized but gradually enlarging. She had been a heavy smoker for many years, was hypertensive and had sustained a myocardial infarction 10 years previously.

The most common scleroderma overlap syndromes are mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD), scleromyositis and synthetase syndrome. There is controversy concerning MCTD as a separate entity due to heterogeneous clinical manifestations, not infrequent transformation into definite CTD and various classification criteria.

Psoriatic Arthritis or Overlap Syndrome
Ophthalmologica, 2010In this work we describe a case of papillophlebitis type II according to Hayreh in a young woman affected by psoriatic arthritis. On the basis of an analysis of the patient’s HLA system – B7, DR7 (characteristics of psoriatic arthritis) and B51 (present in 81% of patients affected by BehÇet’s syndrome) – we hypothesize that this may be a case of an ...

Autoimmune overlapping syndromes
Clinics in Liver Disease, 2003The overlap syndrome raises several questions. First could these patients have two coincident autoimmune diseases? Such possibility cannot be discarded in particular in the setting of consecutive occurrence of the two conditions (eg, PBC followed by AIH) and this is consistent with the fact that autoimmune diseases are associated with one another in ...

Journal of Hepatology, 2005
The term ‘overlap syndrome’ has been introduced to the field of hepatology to describe variant forms of autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) which present with characteristics of AIH and primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) or primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). There is still controversy whether these overlap syndromes form distinct entities or are only variants ...

Scleroderma is a connective tissue disease that causes fibrosis and vascular abnormalities, but that also has an autoimmune component. Many patients with scleroderma have a positive antinuclear antibody, and there can be family histories of other connective tissue diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and rheumatoid arthritis.

Overlap features with diffuse scleroderma are rare. More commonly, other connective tissue diseases have features usually seen in the systemic involvement of scleroderma. The limited form of scleroderma (CREST) has interesting associations with primary biliary cirrhosis, whereas mixed connective tissue disease evolves toward a scleroderma-like picture ...

Many connective tissue diseases share common signs and symptoms, which frequently makes the diagnosis of a specific rheumatic disease difficult. Rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, systemic sclerosis, polymyositis, dermatomyositis (DM), mixed connective tissue disease, and Sjögren's syndrome can present with similar clinical features ...
