Adherence to four dietary indices and the risk of all‐cause and cause‐specific dementia: Findings from the UK Biobank study

open access: yesDiabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, EarlyView.
Abstract Aims Despite several modifiable risk factors for dementia being identified, diet is often excluded from consideration due to insufficient evidence. Although various healthy dietary indices have been associated with improved health outcomes, their link to dementia risk remains unclear.

From liver to limb: Exploring the association between fatty liver disease and peripheral artery disease—A systematic review

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Clinical Investigation, EarlyView.
Abstract Introduction Fatty liver disease, encompassing nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), metabolic dysfunction‐associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), and the recently redefined metabolic dysfunction‐associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), is a growing global health concern with significant cardiovascular implications.

Gastric microbiota‐specific signatures in adults with obesity and Helicobacter pylori‐negative gastritis

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Clinical Investigation, EarlyView.
Abstract Background The role of the gastric microbiome in the pathophysiology of gastritis beyond Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection is poorly understood and has remained unexplored in patients with obesity. The aim of this study was to analyse gastric mucosa‐associated microbiota in patients with obesity and nonatrophic chronic gastritis in the ...

Enhanced mitochondrial respiration in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from young children with overweight/obesity and insulin resistance

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Clinical Investigation, EarlyView.
We investigated measures of mitochondrial function in certain types of blood cells and metabolism in 65 children, 5–10 years old. Compared to children of normal weight (n = 20), children with overweight/obesity (n = 28) and especially those with insulin resistance (n = 17), differed in how their cells produced energy.

Autoimmunity in MASLD: Focus on autoantibodies, anti‐apolipoprotein A1 IgG and G protein‐coupled receptors

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Clinical Investigation, EarlyView.
This review outlines the potential role of anti‐GPCR autoantibodies in MASLD/MASH, given their involvement in a wide range of diseases and their possible contribution to MASLD/MASH pathophysiology. We also focused on anti‐ApoA1 autoantibodies, sharing functional features with anti‐GPCR autoantibodies and have been shown to promote liver steatosis in ...

Associations of serum carotenoids with cardiovascular disease mortality among patients with metabolic dysfunction‐associated steatotic liver disease

open access: yesHepatology Research, EarlyView.
In metabolic dysfunction‐associated steatotic liver disease/metabolic dysfunction‐associated steatohepatitis patients aged <60 years, high serum β‐cryptoxanthin concentrations were inversely associated with CVD mortality. Abstract Aim High cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality occurred among metabolic dysfunction‐associated steatotic liver disease ...

Association of Periodontal Condition With Serum C‐Reactive Protein Levels: The Role of Serum Apolipoproteins' Concentration

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Periodontology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Aim To investigate whether the systemic inflammatory response against inflammatory conditions in the periodontium is related to serum apolipoprotein B (ApoB) and A1 (ApoA1) concentrations. Material and Methods The study consisted of the Health 2000 Survey participants (n = 2709) aged 30–49 years.

The preparation of copper-oxidized LDL for the measurement of oxidized LDL antibodies by EIA [PDF]

open access: possibleAtherosclerosis, 2000
In the present study we try to define the optimal conditions for preparation of copper-oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) to be used for the assay of oxLDL antibodies by enzyme immunoassay (EIA). Oxidation of LDL was monitored by measuring the formation of conjugated dienes at 234 nm and the generation of fluorescent products with emission at 430

Mechanisms of LDL oxidation

Clinica Chimica Acta, 2010
Many lines of evidence suggest that oxidized low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is implicated in the pathogenesis of atherosclerotic vascular diseases. This review summarizes a diversity of mechanisms proposed for LDL oxidation serving for the so-called "LDL oxidation hypothesis of atherogenesis".We investigated the literature and our research results ...

Contribution of an In Vivo Oxidized LDL to LDL Oxidation and Its Association With Dense LDL Subpopulations

Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology, 1996
Abstract Oxidative modification of LDL is thought to be a radical-mediated process involving lipid peroxides. The small dense LDL subpopulations are particularly susceptible to oxidation, and individuals with high proportions of dense LDL are at a greater risk for atherosclerosis. An oxidatively modified plasma LDL, referred to
