Oxidized LDL-Induced Apoptosis
2006There is now substantial evidence establishing that oxLDL and lipid peroxidation products generated in the vascular wall, can elicit proinflammatory and pathological events involved in atherosclerosis. As reported by D. Hajjar and M. Haberland, the oxLDL should be considered as true molecular “Trojan Horses” or “cellular saboteurs” bearing a lot of ...

The Role of Oxidized LDL in Atherosclerosis
1990Atherosclerosis is a complex disease involving a variety of circulating blood components, lipoproteins, and their interactions with the cells and proteins of the extracellular matrix of the artery wall. The end stage lesion, which results in the occlusion of a vessel and/or provides a thrombogenic surface which leads to intravas cular thrombosis is ...

Plasma Lipid Composition and LDL Oxidation
Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine, 2003Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation in vivo depends on lipid composition and on plasma antioxidant status. The aim of our study was to investigate the relationship between plasma lipid composition and LDL oxidation and, in particular, to explore whether LDL-cholesterol/triglycerides ratio (LDL-C/TG) and LDL-cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein (HDL)

Autoantibodies against oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) and LDL oxidation status
Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (CCLM), 2004AbstractOxidized low-density lipoproteins (ox-LDLs) and their autoantibodies (OLAB) are involved in the development of atherosclerosis in animal models, but their role in humans is still not clear. For this reason we studied 54 patients with β-thalassemia major (TM), as a model of chronically low circulating LDLs with a high level of oxidation; 44 ...

Recent data suggest an inverse epidemiological association between intake of flavanol-rich cocoa products and cardiac mortality. Potential beneficial effect of cocoa may be attributed to flavanol-mediated improvement of endothelial function, as well as to enhancement of bioavailability and bioactivity of nitric oxide in vivo.

Oxidative stress is generally thought to play an important contributory role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Although there are many determinants in the development of this disease, substantial in vitro evidence links the production of oxidized forms of LDL to molecular processes involved in atherogenesis (1–7).
