Comparative study of defect energetics in HfO2 and SiO2

open access: yes, 2003
We perform ab initio calculations, based on density functional theory, of substitutional and vacancy defects in the monoclinic hafnium oxide (m-HfO2) and alpha-quartz (SiO2).

Tailored Hierarchical Porous Copper Architectures via Three Dimensional Printing and Pressure‐less Sintering for Next‐Generation Lithium‐Metal Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A hierarchical porous copper current collector is fabricated via three‐dimensional printing combined with pressureless sintering to stabilize lithium metal anodes. The interconnected architecture lowers local current density, guides uniform Li deposition within pores, and suppresses dendrite growth.

Evaluation of dielectric and piezoelectric behavior of unpoled and poled barium titanate polycrystals with oxygen vacancies using phase field method

open access: yesInternational Journal of Smart and Nano Materials, 2016
This article studies the dielectric and piezoelectric behavior of unpoled and poled barium titanate (BaTiO3) polycrystals with oxygen vacancies. A phase field model is employed for BaTiO3 polycrystals, coupled with the time-dependent Ginzburg–Landau ...

Effect of Laser Deoxidation on Adhesive‐Bonded Aluminum in an Oxygen‐Free Atmosphere

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates laser ablation of aluminum under oxygen‐free conditions. The goal is to produce oxide‐free substrates that enable improved adhesive bonding with epoxy. Optimized laser parameters (90% overlap, 300 µJ) combined with oxide‐free substrates result in the highest tensile strength of the adhesive bond.

Removing Oxide Layers and Retaining Oxide‐Free Steel Surfaces by Polishing in Oxygen‐Free Atmosphere

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
In this study, the efficacy of wet mechanical polishing under an oxygen‐free atmosphere for deoxidation and the retention of an oxide‐free steel surface are elucidated using X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The methodology proved successful; however, the results were highly dependent on the preparation of the solvents used to clean the samples after ...

Facile Strategy for Synthesizing Non-Stoichiometric Monoclinic Structured Tungsten Trioxide (WO3−x) with Plasma Resonance Absorption and Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity

open access: yesNanomaterials, 2018
Oxygen vacancy defects play an important role in improving the light-capturing and photocatalytic activity of tungsten trioxide (WO3). However, the hydrogen treatment method that is commonly used to introduce oxygen vacancies is expensive and dangerous ...

Hubbard band or oxygen vacancy states in the correlated electron metal SrVO$_3$?

open access: yes, 2016
We study the effect of oxygen vacancies on the electronic structure of the model strongly correlated metal SrVO$_3$. By means of angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) synchrotron experiments, we investigate the systematic effect of the UV dose on the ...

Influence of an Oxygen‐Free Atmosphere on Diamond‐Single‐Grain Scratching of Ti–6Al–4V

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Single‐grain scratching of Ti–6Al–4V is investigated under controlled, oxygen‐free, and ambient atmospheres using a novel experimental setup with in situ high‐speed imaging. The approach enables direct observation of chip formation and adhesion under suppressed oxidation.

Dual‐Site Synergistic Mechanism via Single‐Atom and Vacancy Drives Lattice Oxygen Activation in Layered Double Hydroxides

open access: yesAdvanced Science
Establishing the synergistic effect between single atoms and vacancies for the lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM) pathway of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial for developing robust and efficient catalysts, yet remains unexplored.
